【ナローボートはうなぎの寝床】～60歳からのイギリス旅～

(1)I hadn't known narrow boat until several years ago.

私は数年前まで、ナローボートのことを知りませんでした。

(2)I knew it by chance when I watched a TV program about the UK.

イギリスについてのテレビ番組を見ていた時に、偶然、ナローボートのことを知りました。

(3)We can operate the narrowboat without license.

ナローボートの操縦は免許がいらないんです。

(4)Then, I thought I'd like to ride a narrowboat someday.

その時、私はいつの日か、ナローボートに乗りたいな～と思いました。

いつの日か　　someday

　some day　にすると「来週のいつか」「来月のいつか」のように

訪れることが前提での「いつか」となり、若干ニュアンスが異なる

(5)I imagined that I would be thrilled to operate a narrowboat.

私はナローボートの操縦をしたら、わくわくするだろうと思いました。

explaned to us about their narrow boat.

まず最初に、ナローボートのオーナーのアンディーさんとあつこさんが

彼らのナローボートについて説明してくれました。

and the length is 20m."

The name of the narrow boat is "AT EASE".

このナローボートの名前は”アット　イーズ”です。

AT EASE というのは、のんびりして、

気楽に、くつろいで、

楽な姿勢で、安心して　という意味です。

Go down the stairs, we can enter the cabin.

階段を降りると、船室に入れます。

There are lots of folding furnitures in the cabin.

船室には多くの折り畳み式家具があります。

This is the washroom.

ここは洗面所です。

Round window is lovely.

丸窓が素敵です。

The room is clean

and they have good taste in interior.

部屋は清潔で、インテリアのセンスも素敵です。

This is the kitchen.

ここが台所です。

(9)Narrow boat is shaped like a " Bed for eel",

because the length is long and the width is narrow.

ナローボートは「うなぎの寝床」のような形をしています。

なぜならば長さは長くて、幅が狭いからです。

These are eels.

鰻（うなぎ）です。

In Kyoto,

there are many long and narrow houses

called "Unagi no nedoko".

京都には多くの「うなぎの寝床」と

呼ばれている細長い家があります。

(10)"In the UK, there are few mosquitos but some horseflies are frying.

Be careful not to be bitten by horsefly."

「イギリスにはほとんど蚊がいませんが、アブが飛んでいます。

アブに皮膚を刺されないように、気をつけて下さい。」

(11)Then, why is it called horse-fly in English?

では、なぜ英語で馬のハエと呼ばれているのでしょうか？

(12)Because horsefly is a fly living around horse.

なぜならば、アブは馬の周りで生活しているハエだからです。

(13)Well, now it's clear.

ああ、そういうことだったんですか。

「それから、スティンギングネトルにも触らないように気を付けて下さいね。」

(15)"If you touch it, your skin will be so irritated and itchy."

irritate （イリテイトゥ）　イライラさせる

この単語を使って「かぶれる」を表現できる

irritatedは不快な状態にさせる　という意味合い

「もしネトルを触ってしまったら、ネトルのそばにあるドックリーフを探して、その皮膚を擦って下さい。」

is held in Dorset in summer.

イギリスでは、夏にドーセット州で、”ネトル早食い競争”が開催されます。

The champion nettle eater ate

76 feet (22m) nettle in 2014.

７６フィート（２２メートル）のネトルを食べました。

(19)Besides this, there are some strange contests in the UK.

他にもイギリスには奇妙なコンテストがいろいろあります。

(21)Player might give an athlete's foot to the opponent in the Toe Wrestling..

(26)We left Wilmcote for Wootton Wawen in the evening on June 17th .

私達は６月１７日の夕方、ウットンウオーエンを目指し、ウイルムコートを出発しました。

(28)Andy taught me how to operate the boat in Japanese.

アンディーさんは私に日本語でボートの操縦を教えてくれました。

I saw a narrow boat for sale.

売りに出されているナローボートを見ました。

I wonder how much it is.

(29)He is from southern England,

actually he was working as ALT English teacher at school

in Japan for 5 years when he was young.

彼は南イングランド出身ですが、

実は若い時に、日本でＡＬＴの英語の先生として、5年間働いていたのです。

"Now it's your turn. 　Give it a try. "

彼は運河の川幅の広い所で、

「さあ、あなたの番ですよ。挑戦してみて下さい。」と言いました。

(31)I had been really looking forward to doing.

私はナローボートを操縦するのをとても楽しみにしていました。

(32)But I get nervous easily and I am a blunderer.

でも私は緊張しやすい方だし、しかもドジです。

(33)I was a little nervous, but operating the narrow boat was so exciting.

私はちょっと緊張しましたが、ナローボートの操縦はとても興奮しました。

(34)I operated it with all my might as he taught me.

私は彼に教えられた通りに、全力でナローボートを操縦しました。

(35)I got the knock a little for doing step by step.

私は少しずつ、そのコツをちょっとだけ覚えました。

(36)Actually we were going to rent a charter narrow boat first

that we have to operate all by ourselves.

実は最初、私達は全部自分たちで操縦しなければならない

(37)But I thoght it was a good idea to choose the narrow boat with orner.

でも私はオーナーと一緒のナローボートを選んだのはいい考えだったと思いました。

(38)It must be hard for us to operate the narrow boat

with tension for the whole day.

一日中緊張してナローボートを操縦するのは、私達にとってとてもむずかしいに違いないからです。

(41)That day we passed 2 aqueducts and 1 Lock.

その日、私達は２つの水道橋（アクアダクト）と１つの閘門（ロック）を通過しました。

前方に水道橋です。

The train ran under the aqueduct.

水道橋の下には列車が走っていました。

This is famous Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

これは有名なポントカサルテ水道橋です。

We didn't cross on it.

私達はここを渡りませんでした。

It's the longest and highest aqueduct in the UK.

イギリスで一番長くて高い水道橋です。

(42)And next day we passed 1 aqueduct and 18 Locks.

そして次の日に、私達は１つの水道橋と１８の閘門（こうもん）を通過しました。

(43)I was impressed by those aqueducts and Locks.

私はそれらの水道橋と閘門（こうもん）に感動しました。

(44)The most exciting part of them was raised water in the Lock.

一番ワクワクしたのは、閘門で水が上がっていくところでした。

This is hard work.

これはハードワークです。

(45)"Lock is called Suimon in Japanese, but actually Koumon is right."

「ロックは日本語で水門と呼ばれていますが、実は閘門（こうもん）が正しいのです。」

(46)"You know, because Koumon has 2 meanings in Japan."

「ご存知のように日本では”こうもん”には２つの意味があるからです。」

(47)One is Lock, and the other is anus.

１つは閘門、そしてもう１つは肛門という意味です（笑）。

(49)Several days ago, I heard that NHK announcer said, "Suimon".

数日前に、私はNHKのアナウンサーが「水門」と言っているのを聞きました。

閘門は水位（水面の高さ）が違う運河をスムーズに行き来できるように作られました。

(51)There are some Locks in the Panama Canal as well.

パナマ運河でも同じくいくつかの閘門があります。

(52)I wanted to see the Lock in the Panama Canal,

but I was satisfied to see the small lock in England.　

That was enough for me.

私はパナマ運河の閘門を見たかったのですが、

イングランドの小さな閘門を見て満足しました。

これで十分でした。

(53)I saw 19 Locks for 2 days , so I could understand the system well.

私は２日間で１９箇所の閘門を見ましたから、そのシステムがよく理解できました。

(54)Even if I saw Lock on line, I couldn't understand.

どんなにインターネットで閘門を見ても理解できませんでした。

(55)Seeing is believing, exactly.

まさに、百聞は一見にしかず……です。

(56)We arrived in Wootton Wawen (today's moorings) at 6:00 p.m..

私達は午後６時にウットンウオーエン（今日の停泊地）に到着しました。

AT EASE is over there.

向こうにアットイーズ号がいますね。

Potted plants are on the some narrow boat

like house on land.

陸の上の家のように、

鉢植えの植物を置いているナローボートもあります。

Some narrow boat orners have pets.

ペットを飼っているナローボートオーナーもいます。

●arrive in　　arrive at 　の使い分けについて

　　　場所

　　　　　到着する場所が村、町、国、大陸などの名前なら、inという前置詞を使う
　
　　　　　到着する場所がホテル、駅、空港などの名前なら、at　という前置詞を使う

　　　時

　　　　　到着する月、年、季節を表現する場合、in　という前置詞を使う

　　　　　また朝(in the morning)、午後(in the afternoon)、

　　　　　　　　晩(in the evening)に到着する場合、　

　　　　　in　という前置詞を使うが、夜night だけは例外で、必ずat night となる

　　　　　具体的に到着する時刻がわかっている場合は、必ずat　という前置詞を使う　

　　　　　at 6 o'clock 　　at half past twelve　など

(57)Atuko took us to the pub called

"NAVIGATION INN" in Wootton Wawen.

あつこさんは私達をウットンウオーエンの”ナビゲーション・イン”という

パブに連れていってくれました。

(58)"Navigation means sailing or flight."

「ナビゲーションは航海、飛行という意味です。」

(59)"When the canal was made in the past,

some rest house were built along the canal

for navies (digger worker) ."

「昔、この運河が作られていた頃、その労働者（掘る労働者）のために、

運河沿いに休憩所が作られました。」

(60)"So, there are some pubs called Navigation Inn now."

「それで、現在、ナビゲーションインと呼ばれているパブがいくつかあるのです。」

(61)We had lunch at the pub near the Royal Courts of Justice.

But It was the first time for us to go to a pub at dinner time,

I was relieved Atuko helped us.

私達は王立裁判所のそばのパブでランチは食べました

でも私達にとって、夕食時にパブに行くのは初めてでしたが、

あつこさんが助けてくれたので安心でした。

(62)After she explaned to us about food,

she went back the narrow boat.

食べ物の説明をした後、彼女はナローボートに帰りました。

(63)We ordered Appletiser and Steak＆Mashroom with Vesitables.

私達はアップルタイザーときのこステーキの野菜添えを注文しました。

(64)Appletiser is soda drink of 100 % pure apple juice

made in Republic of South Africa.

アップルタイザーは南アフリカ共和国で作られているりんご果汁１００％の炭酸飲料です。

(65)It tasted plane, not too sweet.

その味はすっきりして、甘過ぎませんでした。

(66)Steak＆Mashroom with Vesitables was country dish

in England, I like it.

きのこステーキの野菜添えはイングランドの田舎料理でしたが、私は好きです。

(67)Pub in Britain was a place for relaxation

and refreshment, not just bar.

イギリスのパブはただの飲み屋ではなく、憩いの場でした。

(68)I could soak the English country-side atmosphere at that pub.

私はそのパブでイングランドの田舎の雰囲気に浸ることが出来ました。

(69)After dinner, we got back the narrow boat on the canal.

夕食の後、私達は運河のナローボートに戻りました。

(70)I was really interested in the drainage equipment

in the shower room of narrow boat.

ナローボートのシャワー室の排水装置が、とても興味深かったんです。

(71)Narrow boat is riding on the water,

so the water level in shower room is same as the water level in canal.

ナローボートは水に浮かんでいますから、シャワールームの水位は運河の水位と同じなのです。

ひもを引っ張るんです。

from kitchen, washroom and shower room except toilet.

ところで、ナローボートの生活排水（トイレ以外の台所、洗面所、シャワー室）は運河に流します。

but I'm not sure whether everyone use it.

あつこさんは環境にやさしい植物性洗剤を使っていますが、

皆がそうしているかどうかは確かではありません。

　eco friendly　や　earth friendly とも言います

(80)First I was worried about water pollution, but duck and fish swam ,

I thought it was almost no problem.

最初、私は水質汚染を心配しましたが、鴨や魚も泳いでいたし、

ほとんど問題がないのではと思いました。

(81)To my surprise, there was a vacuum system toilet like airplane.

驚いたことに、飛行機のようなバキュームシステムのトイレがありました。

(82)It doesn't need much water but it's expensive.

たくさんの水を必要としませんが、高価なものです。

(83)Most narrow boat has 600 liter water in the tank,

but their barrow boat has 940 liter water in it.

ほとんどのナローボートには６００リットルの水がタンクに入っていますが、

彼らのナローボートには９４０リットルの水が入っています。

while we are washing our face,

brushing our teeth, washing our hands, taking a shower and so on.

and the single bed's width was about 60 cm.

ナローボートの内幅は１．８メートルで、シングルベッドの幅は約６０センチメートルでした。

普通サイズのシングルベッドは約９７センチメートルです。

(87)Before sleeping, I was worried about,

"I wonder if I could sleep such a narrow bed."

眠る前、私は心配しました「こんな狭いベッドで眠れるかなあ。」

●今年は～年です。

●4WD と　AWD

　　　　４　Wheel Drive　の略ですが、この表記は実は日本だけで、

　　　　一般的にはAWD　All Wheel Driveを使います。

　　　　タイヤは４輪とは限らないので、全てのタイヤが駆動するという意味で

　　　　AWDを使います。知りませんでした。
