【シロナガスクジラは私の家より大きかった！】～60歳からのイギリス旅～

(1)We had a breakfast at my daughter's house close to our hotel

because that day's hotel was a bed without meals.

私達はその日のホテルが素泊まりだったので、ホテルのそばの娘の家で朝食を食べました。

(2)Then, we went to Natural History Museum

in South Kensington by No.74 bus.

You know there was a fire in North Kensington on June 15th this year.

それから、７４番のバスで、サウスケンジントンの自然史博物館へ行きました。

ご存知のように、今年の６月１５日に、ノースケンジントンで火事がありましたね。

(3)I expected , "I'll be able to see the giant dinosaur skeleton !"

like a child.

私は子供の様に、「巨大な恐竜の骨格が見られる！」と期待しました。

未来のことを言う時には、willと一緒にcanは

使えないので、be able toを使う

(4)Natural History Museum is the most popular museum in London,

but it was admission free.

自然史博物館はロンドンで一番人気の博物館ですが、入館料は無料でした。

(5)I got the information on line about

that Cromwell Road entrance is very crowded

but Exhibition Road entrance is not crowded.

私はクロムウエル通りの入り口はとても混んでいるけれど、

エクシビジョン通りの入り口は混んでいないという情報を

インターネットから知っていました。

自然史博物館は４つのグループに分かれています、

ブルーゾーン（地球上の生命についてその１）、オレンジゾーン（ダーウィンセンター）、

グリーンゾーン（地球上の生命についてその２と化石・樹木などについて）

レッドゾーン（地球について）です。

想像していた通り、たくさんの子供たちがいました。

(13)Kids of school trip wore matching green vest like construction site.

スクールトリップの子供たちは工事現場の様な緑のお揃いのベストを着ていました。

(14)It was popular to take a picture in front of the giant dinosaur skeleton

in entrance,.

入り口の巨大な恐竜の骨格の前で写真を撮るのが人気でした。

(15)Do you know what kind of dinosaur it is ?

それは何ていう種類の恐竜かわかりますか？

(16)It was a diplodocus.

それはディプロドーカスでした。

Diplodocus didn't eat meat.

ディプロドーカスは肉を食べませんでした。

(17)It had a long tail and neck,

and its actual length was more than 25 meters.

ディプロドーカスには長い尻尾と首があり、実際の長さは２５メートル以上ありました。

(18)But the skelton was replica, not real.

でも、その骨格はレプリカであり、本物ではありませんでした。

to the Natural History Museum in London in 1905.

Souvenir shop has many kinds of dinosaur.

I'd like to wear the dinosaur T-shirt,

but I didn't get it.

(25)Well, according to the museum guide,

when we went to the Blue Zone,

we could see the actual size model of blue whale.

博物館のパンフレットによれば、ブルーゾーンに行けば、

実物大のシロナガスクジラの模型が見れるということでした。

(26)The blue whale gallery was in the mammals section.

シロナガスクジラのギャラリーは哺乳類の区域にありました。

(27)That was amazing ! 　Huge 　Inormas !

シロナガスクジラは凄かったです！　すごく巨大でした！

(28)The whale was bigger than my house !

I felt like a dwarf.

そのクジラは私の家より大きかったです！

(30)Well, to be precise, the blue whale can grow up to 30 meters

and weigh up to 130000 kilograms.

体重１３万キログラムの重さになります。

(31)I knew it, but I couldn't imagine it until I see it with my own eyes.

私はそのことを知っていました、でも自分の目で実際に見るまで想像できませんでした。

(32)I imagined that such a huge body is swiming in the sea.

私はあんな巨大な体が海で泳いでいることを想像してみました。

(35)Next I looked at anatomical model of the dog and horse and human

that we could see the skeleton inside.(blue zone)

次に私は、体の中のガイコツが見える犬と馬と人間の模型を見ました（ブルーゾーン）。

(36)They were much easier to understand than only skeleton.

(38)If I press the button of the internal organs name, the part flashed.

その内臓名のボタンを押すと、その部分がピカッと光りました。

(39)Both of my parents passed away of Pancreatic Cancer.

多分、イギリスには地震がないので、子供たちは怖そうでした。

イギリスの建築基準は日本のとは、かなり違います。

so there are few pillars.

イギリスの建物は耐震基準が低いので、柱が少ないのです。

that it was caught alive in a fishing net in 2004

"Excuse me. I'm looking for a Giant squid.

Could you tell me where it is?"

でも見つけられなかったので、職員にききました

「すみません。ダイオウイカを探しています。

どこにあるのか教えて頂けますか？」

(54)She looked troubled first,

and she consulted with a few other staff members about it.

彼女は最初、困ったような顔をして

それから、そのことについて何人かの他の職員と相談していました。

staff 　は日本語ではスタッフと言われていますが

英語では社員や職員を集合的に表す言葉だと先生に教わりました

例えば、sales staff 　はセールス部員全体を表します

staff 　を個人的に表す場合は

staff member 　と言わなければなりません

(55)First, she took me to the reception desk,

I had to pay the money for seeing a giant squid there.

まず彼女は私を受付に連れて行き、

私はそこでダイオウイカを見るためのお金を払わなければなりませんでした。

(56)Can you guess how much it was?

いくらだったと思いますか？

(57)It was 10￡, about 1300 yen.

１０ポンド、約１３００円くらいでした。

(58)Next, she took me to the cloakroom,

and I had to keep my bag and umbrella there.

次に彼女は私を荷物預かり所に連れて行き、

私はそこでかばんと傘を預けなければなりませんでした。

(59)Price list was put on the wall,

but she explained about me to the cloak staff.

料金表が壁に貼ってありましたが、彼女は私について預かり所の職員に説明していました。

(60)I thought she told him that admission fee

for seeing a giant squid was including baggage fee.

彼女は荷物預かり所の職員に、ダイオウイカの入場料は荷物預かり料を含んでいると

言ったんだと思いました。

(61)Then, she took me around the museum.

それから彼女は私を、博物館中、連れ回しました。

It was hard that I walked behind her because

her length were different

from mine(Japanese)

彼女の足の長さは日本人の私の足の長さと違って

いたので、彼女の後ろを歩くのは大変でした。

And she is young and I am old.

それに彼女は若いし、私は年寄りです。

(62)And finally she said,

"I'm sorry. You will be able to see it in about 2 hours.".

そして最後に彼女は言いました

「ごめんなさい。あなたがダイオウイカを見れるのは、約２時間後です。」

(63)At that time, it was already 12:00.

I was disappointed to hear that.

その時、既に１２時でした。

私はそれを聞いてがっかりしました。

(64)We were going to British Museum after Natural History Museum,

so I gave it up.

私達は自然史博物館の後、大英博物館に行くつもりだったので、

ダイオウイカを見るのはあきらめました。

(65)I asked the staff,

"Actually I don't have much time now. 　Could you refund the money?."

私はその職員にお願いしました

「実は今、あまり時間がありません。返金して頂けますか？」

(66)Then, we took a tube Piccadilly Line

from South Kensington Station to Holborn Station.

それから、私達はサウスケンジントン駅からホルボーン駅まで地下鉄ピカデリー線に乗りました。

(67)We had a lunch at the chinese restaurant on the way to British Museum.

大英博物館への途中、中華レストランで昼ご飯を食べました。

今日はこんなことが勉強になりました。

今日は英語だけでなく、フランス語の講義もありました。

●安静にする

　　　彼は今、病院で安静にしています。　He is resting in the hospital now.

●前髪　　bangs（アメリカ英語）　　　fringe （イギリス英語）

　　　前髪をここまで切って下さい。　　I want my bangs trimmed up to , "here"

●在庫がある　　　available 　　be in stock

　　　　まだ、在庫はありますか？　　　　　Do you have a stock? 　　　　

　　　今夜、まだ空室はありますか？　　　Do you have any rooms available for tonight?

　　　2枚だけ、チケットの在庫があります。We have only two available ticket.

●先生によると、「それが人生さ」　　は

　　フランス語で　”C'est la vie.”（セラヴィー)　というそうです。　

　　C 　は　Ce（サ）　のことで、英語の　That 　に当たります。

　　est 　は　英語の　is 、　la は英語の　the、vie　は英語の　life に相当します。

　　Ce の　e 　と　est 　の　e 　がどちらも母音なので、　e が省略されます。

　　英語で言えば、　”That is the life"　です。

　　フランス人が口にする決まり文句で、何か思い通りにいかなかったり、

　　がっかりした時などに、あきらめ混じりに、「人生ってそんなもんだ」

　　「人生なるようにしかならない」　「仕方ないよ」という風に使うそうです。

　　また、ウイッキペディアによると、一般に、あきらめ顔、悲しそうな顔、達観した顔、

　　むずかしそうな顔（笑）をして言うそうです。

　　そして、有名な　「ジュテーム」　Je t'aime についてもこの際なので先生にききました。

　　Je （ジュ）　は　「私は」、　te （トゥ）　は　「あなた」、　

　　aime　（エイム）　は　「好き」　という意味です。

　　英語の　I love you. 　と　語順が違いますね。日本語と同じです。

●私のフランス語はさびついています（私のフランス語はだめになってきている）。　　

　　My french is rusty.

　　rusty 　は　形容詞で　さびついた　の意味。　　　

　　a rusty old knife 　錆びついた古ナイフ

　　rust 　は　名詞で　さび　　　　

　　rusty 　は　以前は出来ていたことがうまく出来なかったり、力や技能が衰える　という意味

　　以前は結構話せたのに、使わない間に話せなくなった時などに使います。

　　My math is pretty rusty. 　私の数学もずいぶんさびついてしまった。

　　スポーツの世界でも、選手が全盛期を過ぎた後などにも使える表現で、

　　例えば元アメリカの女子サッカー選手が

　　最後に出場した試合などでは、She is a little rusty.　とアナウンサーが言っていたそうです。

　　　　昔、先生はネパールで世界一怖いトイレを使いました。

　　　　　ネパールをトレッキングしている時、断崖絶壁に

　　　　　　　こわ～いトイレがあったそうです。

　　　　　澄んだ空気のシーンとした静寂の中、用を足したそうです。

　　　　　I am afraid of hights, but I'd like to use the most scary toilet in the world.

　　　　　私は高所恐怖症ですが、世界一怖いトイレを使いたいです。

●「ポール・ニューメン下さい」

　　　　　先生は昔、にゅうめんという言葉を覚えられなかったので、

　　　　ポール・ニューメンと覚えたそうです。さすがです。

　　　　私もそんな風に、英語を覚えたいと思います。

●I woke my friend up.　　私は友達を起こした。

　　　　　wake 人　up 　　で　人を起こす

●再発行　reissue （リィイシュー）

●Don't put all your eggs in one basket.　全ての卵を一つのかごに入れるな

　　　卵が入ったかごを落としたら、中の卵が全部割れてしまうので、

　　　いくつかのかごに分散しておくべきだという意味。

　　　今日はMさんがカードや保険証・運転免許証などが全部入った財布

　　　をなくしてしまった話から、英語の格言を先生から教えてもらいました。

●COD　とは？　　　着払いのことだそうです（配達時に現金で払うことから）
