After the riding elephant and Ayurveda experience, 　　I arrived at the hotel in Sigiriya in the evening.
ハバラナで象に乗って、アーユルヴェーダ体験をした後、 　　私はシギリアのホテルに夕方到着しました。
The hotel was a cottage type one, 　　so it was stylish and had an open feeling, 　　but there were some problems 　　because outside the door was not a corridor 　　unlike ordinary hotels.
そのホテルは、コテージ型ホテルで、お洒落で開放感がありましたが、 　　ドアの外は普通のホテルのように廊下ではなかったので 　　問題もいろいろありました。
My room was the 1st floor on the light side. 私の部屋は１階の右側でした。
Wow, that's pretty. Was it expensive ?
わあ、きれいですね。 高かったですか？
I can't remember it.

For example, there were lots of flies in the room.
例えば、ホテルの部屋には蠅がた〜くさんいました。
When I wanted to have a nap, 　　I couldn't sleep because the flies were noisy.
昼寝をしようと思ったらブンブンうるさいので眠れませんでした。
I didn't like killing, but it couldn't be helped, 　　I beat more than 30 flies to death.
殺生はしたくありませんでしたが、仕方がないので、 　　３０匹以上叩いて殺しました。

いえいえ、およそです。
But I couldn't kill the last one that was very quick.
ところが、最後の１匹がとても素早くて、どうしても殺せませんでした。
Even if one fly was noisy 　　that the fly buzzed around my ears. Even though it was only one fly, it was very noisy.
たとえたったの１匹でも、蠅は耳元でブンブンするのでうるさかったのです。

I thought "how can I kill the last one" 　　(I was thinking of how to kill).
私はどうやったら、その最後の１匹を殺せるかを考えました。
I thought if I turned on a ceiling fan on to high speed, 　　and make the fly not move by the strong wind, 　　I might kill it. I tried it and it succeeded.
天井のファンを強にして、その強風で身動きできなくしてからなら 　　殺せるかもしれないと思いました。 やってみたら、成功しました。
I took a shower and slept in the quiet room without flies.
私はシャワーを浴びて、蠅のいない静かな部屋でぐっすり眠りました。
Besides, I thought mosquitos might come 　　in my room from gap under the door. So I put battery-powered mosquito coil 　　that I brought from Japan,, 　　then, lots of mosquitos died on the floor 　　near the door next morning.
またドアの下のすき間から、蚊が入ってくるかもしれないと思いました。 そこで日本から持っていった電池式蚊取りを置いておいたら、 　　翌朝、ドアのそばの床にたくさんの蚊が死んでいました。

Mosquito coil was prepared in the room, 　　but I thought if I burn a mosquito coil, 　　the room were will be filled with smoke. That's why I took a battery powered mosquito coil 　　from Japan.
ホテルの部屋には蚊取り線香が用意されていましたが、 　　もしそれをたいたら、部屋が煙で充満すると思いました。  だから、日本から電池式の蚊取りを持っていったんです。
What is the inside ?
中には何が入っているんですか？
Chemical mosquito coil mat inside.
化学的な蚊取り線香マットが中に入っています。
I have never seen like this.
私はこんな蚊取り線香を見たことがありません。
I have used the mosquito coil for a long time.
私はその蚊取り線香を長い間使ってきています。

In the early morning at 4:30, 　　I woke up by the voices of prayer outside.
早朝４時半に私は外のお祈りの声で目を覚ましました。
I thought it was prayers of Muslim before sunrise. Do you know anything about it , Sensei ? Muslim or Buddhist ?
このお祈りはもしかして、イスラム教徒の日の出前のお祈り 　　なのかな〜と私は思いました。 先生はそれについて何か知っていることがありますか？ イスラム教徒なのか、仏教徒なのか知っていますか？
I think probably Buddhist. Because I don't think Muslim pray before sunrise.
おそらく仏教徒だと思います。 なぜならイスラム教徒は夜明け前にお祈りしないと思いますから。
I wanted to go to the prayer place, 　　when I opened my room door, 　　there was a patrolman of the hotel with flashlight.
私はそのお祈りの場所まで行ってみたいと思い、 　　部屋のドアを開けたら、懐中電灯を持ったホテルの見回りの人がいました。
I asked him, "Where is the prayer place ?" 　　he said, "No, no, it's dangerous."
その人に「どこでお祈りをしているんですか？」ときいたら、 　　「危ないからだめですよ。」と言われました。

When I thought twice about it, 　　I realised it was dangerous 　　there were could be a chance of many wild dogs 　　and leopards by any chance.

よくよく考えると、外には野犬もたくさんいるし、もしかしたら 　　ヒョウもいるかもしれないので危ないということに気づきました。

I was going to stay 2 nights, 　　so I pasted a paper on the outside of the door 　　before going to the Sigiriya Rock in the morning.
そのシギリアのホテルには２泊するつもりでしたから、 　　私は朝、シギリアロックに行く前に、ドアの外側に貼り紙をしました。
"Please don't open the door while you are cleaning. Because lots of flies will come to my room. Yesterday I killed more than 30 flies. Pretty please."
「掃除中にドアを開けないで下さい。 たくさんの蠅が私の部屋に入ってくるからです。 昨日私は３０匹以上の蠅を殺しました。 どうかお願いします。」

I think he couldn't understand English, maybe.

Just like in Japan, it's opposite, 　　in Sri Lanka, lots of people can speak English, 　　but wrighting and reading are difficult for them.
日本とは逆で、スリランカでは多くの人々が英語を話しますが、 　　書くことと読むことは彼らにとってはむずかしいんですよ。

Because if housekeeper opens the door 　　and cleans my room while visiting Sigiriya Rock, 　　all my efforts went for nothing.
●go for nothing　　水の泡になる、台無しになる
もしシギリアロックに出かけている間に、掃除係りの人がまたドアーを開けて、 　　掃除したら、私の努力が水の泡になってしまうからです。
Before the day, 　　I promised my driver to leave for Sigiriya Rock 　　at 6:30 in the morning.
シギリアロックには朝６時半に出発することを 　　ドライバーと前日に約束していました。
I told him the day before, 　　" I won't eat breakfast in the hotel 　　I'm going to eat instant food from Japan, 　　I want to leave the hotel at 6:30 　　and climb to Sigiriya Rock from 7 o'clock."
前日に私はドライバーに言いました。 　　「明日はホテルの朝食を食べずに、日本から持ってきた 　　インスタント食品を食べてから、６時半にホテルを出発して 　　７時からシギリアロックに登りたいです。」
My breakfast was a cup of milk tea, canned tuna, sweet roast chestnuts. 私の朝食は、ミルク紅茶、ツナ缶、天津甘栗でした。
Then my driver said, 　　"What ? 　it's too early. 　　It's enough to go out at 7:30.
すると、ドライバーは言いました。 　　「え〜？　早すぎますよ。７時半に出かければ充分ですよ。」
I told him, 　　"If we leave at 7:30, 　　maybe I climb the Sigilia Rock at over past 8:30. 　　There will be many people and it will be hot."
私はドライバーに言いました。 　　「７時半に出発したら、シギリアロックに登るのは 　　８時半過ぎになってしまいます。 　　人が多くなるだろうし、暑くなります。」
When we arrived at the Sigilia Rock, 　　there were few tourists just like I thought.
シギリアロックに到着したら、案の定、観光客はとても少なかったです。
I bought a ticket at the ticket office. it was 3900 rupees for foreigner's special price.
チケット売り場でチケットを買いました。 外国人特別料金で３９００ルピーでした。
Hahaha.

What does it say in Sinhalese ? シンハラ語で何て書いてありますか？
Adult …50 rupees.
大人が５０ルピー。

It was the rule that guides without certification 　　couldn't guide at the Sigilia Rock. I promised my driver to meet up later.
シギリアロックでは、資格を持たないガイドは 　　案内できないという決まりになっていました。 私はドライバーと後で会う約束をしました。
When I tried to go to the entrance of it, 　　a Japanese language guide 　　appeared out of the blue.
シギリアロックの入り口に入ろうとしたら、 　　いきなり日本語ガイドが現れました。

ペラペラではありませんでしたけど。
Before going to Sri Lanka, 　　I looked up about Sigiriya Rock online.
スリランカに行く前、私はシギリアロックについてネットで調べました。
There were lots of dangerous information.
ネットには危険情報がたくさんのっていました。
For example, there are huge yellow jacket nests, 　　then we might be get stung by them, 　　bad helper might demand money and so on.
例えば、シギリアロックの途中には大きなスズメバチの巣があって、 　　スズメバチに刺されるかもしれないとか、 　　悪いヘルパーがお金を要求するかもしれないとか……です。
Helper…What's helper ?
ヘルパー……ヘルパーって何ですか？
Helper says, "Come on. This way is safty." Sorry, I don't remember……
ヘルパーは「こっちに来て。こっちの道は安全ですよ。」とか言うのかな。 すみません、覚えていません。
Ah, okay.
ふ〜ん、わかりました。
We shouldn't believe online information without question, 　　but I had been worried just about Sigilia Rock, 　　so I employed hired him.
●employ　と　hire　の違い 　　　employ　　　雇用する（労使契約に基づいて人を雇う）ー正式 　　　hire　　　　　一時的にお金を払って雇う 　　　　　タクシーをハイヤーと呼ぶのは、vehicle for hire　から 　　　　　She hired a baby-sitter.　彼女は子守りを雇った。 　　　　　He is hired as a part time job.　　彼はアルバイトとして雇われています。
インターネットの情報は鵜呑みにしてはいけませんが、 　　シギリアロックについてだけは、かなり心配していましたから 　　私はその日本語ガイドを頼むことにしました。
Employ … the meaning is okay, 　　but employ is business word like a company.
エンプロイ……その意味は大丈夫なんですが、 　　エンプロイは会社のようなビジネス用語なんです。
Hire……Taxy Hire……?
ハイアーって……タクシー、ハイヤーのハイアーですか？
Ya,ya.
はいそうです。
I asked him in Japanese, "How much is it ?" 　　he answered in Japanese, "3000 rupees."
彼に「いくらですか？」と日本語でたずねると、 　　「３０００ルピーです。」と日本語で答えました。
I looked up the market price of the guide online, 　　so I told him, "It's expensive." 　　then he said , "How about 2000 rupees ?"
シギリアロックガイドの相場が２５００ルピーだと日本で調べてあったので、 　　「高いですね。」と言うと、彼は「２０００ルピーでどう？」と言いました。
Wow,1000 rupees down !
へえ〜、１０００ルピー下げましたね！
He spoke English, Italian, Russian, French and Japanese.
彼は英語・イタリア語・ロシア語・フランス語・日本語が話せました。
He had been a Sigiriya Rock guide for 10 years.
彼は１０年間シギリアロックガイドをしていました。
King Cassava Kashyapa 　　in of the Sinhalese dynasty did a coup, 　　and he took the crown by force from his father.
●coup　（クー）　　クーデター
シンハラ王朝のカッシャバ王はクーデターを起こし、父親から王権を奪いました。
When did you study the history 　　in your junior high school or elementary school ?
先生はその歴史をいつ勉強したんですか、中学の時ですか、小学校の時ですか？
Junior high school.
中学の時です。
Because in high school no history in Sri Lanka.
スリランカでは高校では歴史の授業はありませんから。
But Cassava who had a mother from a commoner, 　　was afraid of his half brother Moggalana 　　who had a mother from a royal family, 　　so he left Anuradhapura, 　　it was the capital of Sri Lanka for a long time, 　　and he moved to Sigiriya.
しかし、平民出身の母を持つカッシャバ王は、王族出身の母を持つ腹違いの弟の 　　モッガラーナを恐れ、長い間首都だった 　　アヌラダープラを離れ、シギリアへ遷都しました。
Then, King Kashapa built a castle 　　on the top of Sigilia Rock, 　　Moggalana started a war to against King Kashapa.
そしてシギリアロックの頂上に城を建てましたが、弟のモッガラーナは 　　カッシャバ王に戦いを仕掛けました。
At first, King Kashapa was winning, 　　but, in the end, Moggalana won, 　　then Kashapa cut his own throat and commited suicide.
当初はカッシャバ王が優勢でしたが、 　　最後はモッガラーナが勝利したので、 　　カッサバ王はのどをかき切って自害しました。
King Moggalana moved the capital 　　from Sigiriya to Anuradhapura again.
王位についたモッガラーナは再びシギリアから都をアヌラダープラに移しました。
The castle on Sigiriya Rock 　　with lots of money and manpower 　　was used just for 11 years. What a waste ! But now it is the most popular spot in Sri Lanka.
多くのお金と人手を使って苦労して作られたシギリアロックの城が 　　使われたのは、たったの１１年間だけでした。 ああ、もったいない！ でも今やシギリアロックはスリランカで一番の人気スポットです。
Besides King Cassava usually lived 　　in the castle on the ground, 　　he lived in the castle on the top 　　only when the enemy came.
しかもカッシャバ王は普段は下の宮殿に住み、敵が来た時だけ 　　頂上の宮殿に住んでいました。
I asked the guide, 　　"Did the King climb the steep steps by himself ?
私はガイドさんにききました。 　　「王様はこんな急な階段を自分で登っていったんですか？」
He said, "No, he was carried on litter by his followers."
彼は答えました。 　　「いいえ、輿（こし）に乗って家来に運んでもらっていました。」
I climbed a spiral staircase 　　to see the wall painting of Sigiriya Lady.
螺旋階段を登って、シギリアレディーの壁画を見に行きました。
There was a wall called "Mirror Wall" 　　on the opposite side of the Sigiriya Lady.
シギリアレディーの反対側に「ミラーウォール」という壁がありました。
It was thought that they could see many Sigiriya Ladies 　　by reflecting in the Mirror Wall like mirror.
シギリアレディーをミラーウォールで鏡のように反射させて 　　たくさんのシギリアレディーが見えるように考えられました。
Do you know how to make Mirror Wall ?
ミラーウォールの作り方を知っていますか？

いいえ、知りません。
I looked it up online. They spread mixed the white of egg 　　egg whites, honey and lime 　　over and over again. It was like beauty pack.
ネットで調べました。 卵の白身とハチミツと石灰を混ぜたものを何回も塗ってピカピカにしました。 まるで美容パックのようですよね。
Egg whites and egg yellow ?

No, egg yolk.

I didn't need to worry about the yellow jacket nest 　　because it was very far from the walkway.
私が心配していたスズメバチの巣は実はとても遠い所にあって、 　　全く心配する必要がありませんでした。
I arrived at the top of Sigiriya Rock at last.
ついにシギリアロックの頂上に着きました。
The most surprising thing on the top was 　　there were 2 streat street dogs 　　except in addition to humans.
●addition　　追加 　　　in addition to　〜　　　〜の他に、〜に加えて 　　　He speaks French in addition to English. 　　　　彼は英語の他にフランス語を話します。
頂上で一番驚いたのは、人間以外に　人間の他に 　　野良犬が２匹いたということでした。
Did they climb the stairs step by step ?
あの階段を一段ずつ登ってきたんでしょうか？
I'm not sure……
さあ、どうでしょう……。
They begged for sandwich to from a western family.
欧米人家族にサンドイッチをおねだりしていました。
Did they sleep on the top or on the ground at night ?
夜は頂上で眠ったんでしょうか、それとも地上で眠ったんでしょうか？
I often saw lots of streat dogs on the town, 　　they were sleeping lazily.
スリランカののら犬は町でよく見ましたが、 　　みんなデレ〜っと寝ていました。
But the 2 dogs were cheerful.
でもその２匹の犬はとても元気でした。
They are happy.
その犬たちは幸せなんでしょうね。
I named the cheerful dogs 　　"Sigiriya Dog in at the world helitage".
私はその元気な犬たちを「世界遺産のシギリア犬」と名づけました。
When I went down the Sigilia Rock, 　　I was surprised to see that 　　many tourists climbed up 　　compared to the early morning.
シギリアロックを降りている時に、 　　早朝にくらべて 　　たくさんの観光客が登ってきたのにびっくりしました。
I didn't see Japanese people at all during the climbing up, 　　but I saw some during the coming down Japanese then.
登る時には日本人を全く見ませんでしたが、 　　降りる時に日本人を数人見ました。
When I came down to the ground, 　　my driver picked me up, 　　but there was a heavy traffic jam on the road.
地上に降りると、ドライバーが車で迎えにきていましたが、 　　その道は車がすごく渋滞していて身動きできない状態になっていました。
Oh, terrible !
わあ、ひどいですね！
He told me, 　　"Could you go to the Sigilia Museum on foot ?"
ドライバーは私に「歩いてシギリア博物館に行って下さい。」と言いました。
I just realized "Early birds catch more worms."
私はまさに「早起きは三文の得」を実感しました。
That's right.
その通りです。
We came back to the hotel from Sigilia Rock, 　　receptionist asked me, 　　"Shall I send house keeping to your room ?"
シギリアロックからホテルに帰ったら、 　　レセプションの人が「掃除人をあなたの部屋に送ってもいいですか？」 　　とききました。
I waited for them to finish the cleaning at the hotel lobby, 　　then I went back to my room. 　　there were lots of flies in the room again.
ホテルのロビーで掃除の終わるのを待って、部屋に帰ったら、 　　また蠅だらけの部屋になっていました。
All my efforts came to nothing.
前日にあんなに苦労したのに水の泡でした。。
I went to the reception to complained about it, 　　he lent me a big bug killer spray.
レセプションに文句を言いに行ったら、巨大な殺虫剤スプレーを 　　貸してくれました。
But I almost couldn't hit those quick flies, 　　then bad smell chemicals were just scattered
でも動きが素早い蠅たちにはほとんど命中せずに、 　　ただいやな臭いの薬品がまき散らされただけでした。
Chemical spray is so dangerous, it's bad for you.
殺虫剤はとても危険で、体によくないです。
After that, it couldn't be helped, 　　I exterminated to beat the flies by beating 　　same as the day before.
●exterminate　（エクスターミネイトゥ）　　　 　　　　薬剤などを使って、害虫や獣を駆除するという意味 　　　　徹底的に絶滅させる 　　　　似ている単語に　terminator　　皆殺しにする人　の意味
その後、仕方がないので、前日と同じように叩いて全滅させました。
I'm too sensitive to bugs ?
私は小さな虫に神経質過ぎるのでしょうか？
No, it's normal.
いいえ、普通ですよ。

The festival was held on June 4th this year.
今年の百万石祭りは６月４日に開催されました。

百万石の意味を知っていますか？
Hyakuman-goku means the amount of rice 　　that one million people eat in one year.
百万石とは、百万人の人が１年間に食べる米の量を意味します。
The Kaga clan was very rich in the Edo Period.
加賀藩は江戸時代、とてもお金持ちでした。
The Kaga clan was the present Ishikawa Pre. 　　and Toyama Pre. in the Edo Period..
江戸時代、加賀藩は現在の石川県と富山県でした。

After the Meiji Period, Kaga clan was separated 　　Ishikawa Pre. and Toyama Pre.
明治時代になってから、加賀藩は石川県と富山県に分離されました。
When I was a child, Hyakumangoku Festival was held 　　on June 14th every year, 　　so primary schools were closed. But June 14th is the rainy season, 　　so it was changed to the first Saturday of June.
私が子どもの頃は、百万石祭りは６月１４日に開催されていて、 　　小学校はお休みでした。 でも、６月１４日は梅雨に入るので６月の第一土曜日に変更されました。

In my childhood, we had to do a special homework 　　that we wrote a diary with painting 　　about Hyakumangoku Festival.
子どもの頃、私たちは百万石祭りのことを絵日記に書くという 　　特別の宿題をしなければなりませんでした。
Kandy Esala Perahera Festival 　　reminded me of Hyakumangoku Festival 　　in my childhood.
キャンディーのペラヘラ祭りは私の子どもの頃の 　　百万石祭りを思い出させました。
Because many families saved seats for the festival 　　from the morning in Kandy,too.
なぜなら、キャンディーでも多くの家族が朝からお祭りのための場所取り 　　をしていたからです。
Perahera Festival is broadcasted on TV ?
ペラヘラ祭りはテレビで放映されますか？

Have you ever seen Perahera Festival ?
先生はペラヘラ祭りを見たことがありますか？
Yes, I have many.
はい、何回も見たことがあります。
I saw elephants were dancing with to music in Perahera. I had never seen anything like that before.
ペラヘラ祭りで私は象が音楽に合わせて踊っていたのを見ました。 象が踊るところなんて初めて見ましたよ。
In Sri Lanka, lots of elephants belong to the temples.
スリランカでは、多くの象は寺に属しています。
Recently, those elephants are chained 　　until the festival season. It's not the best, I think.
最近は、それらの象たちは祭りの季節まで鎖でつながれています。 それはよくないことだと私は思います。
Elephants need lots of food, 1 ton.
象は多くの食べ物を必要とします、１トンとか。
Some temples don't take care elephants, 　　but many temples do.
象の世話をしない寺もありますが、多くの寺では世話をしています。
Many elephants gathered Kandy for Perahera, 　　so I couldn't ride a elephant in Sigiriya Rock.
多くの象がペラヘラ祭りのためにキャンディーに集められたので、 　　私はシギリアロックで象に乗れませんでした。
I saw an elephant was carried on the truck 　　on my way to Kandy from Sigiriya.
シギリアからキャンディーへの途中、 　　象がトラックで運ばれているのを見ました。
I thought it must be the elephant for Perahera Festival.
ペラヘラ祭りに出演する象に違いないと思いました。
Long ago, elephants went to Kandy on foot 　　for many days while sleeping outside.

Normally school trips don't ride elephants, 　　spend lots of money so.
普通は修学旅行ではお金がたくさんいるので、象には乗りません。
In Yala National park, 　　people can do the experience of washing elephants 　　and feed elephants.
ヤーラ国立公園では、象を洗ったりエサをあげる体験もできますよ。
I saw a baby elephant mahout was washing a elephant 　　with coconut skin.
私は象使いがココナッツの皮で赤ちゃん象を洗っていたのを見ました。
In Yala you can do it the same.
ヤーラでは、同じことをあなたができるんですよ。

And you can feed a bottle of milk, too.
それにミルクをあげることもできます。

I think it's a good experience. I've never been there, so maybe next time.

でも私の妻はタイ人ですから、タイにもたくさんの象がいます。
Japan, no elephant, so I think special, 　　but Thailand, many elephants, so it's not special.
日本には象がいませんから特別だと思いますが、 　　タイにはたくさんの象がいますから特別ではありません。
