先生は「小銭」を「少しのお金」に直してくれました。
Small money is called "Kozeni" in Japanese. For example, one-yen-coin, called ichien-dama in Japanese.
スモールマネーは日本語で「小銭」と呼ばれています。 例えば、１円玉なんかです。

After 2 nights in Negombo, 　　I went to the old city, Anuradhapura.
ニゴンボに２泊した後、私は古都のアヌラーダプラに行きました。
When I arrived at the hotel, 　　the room was clean 　　and the staff members were very kind, 　　but there was one problem.
ホテルに着いたら、部屋もきれいでスタッフも親切でしたが、 　　一つだけ問題がありました。
Did he speak English ?

The tap water was brown.
水道の水が茶色かったんです。
I had no choice, so I washed my face with my eyes closed.
仕方がないので、目をつぶって顔を洗いました。
I didn't know why it was brown.
なぜ茶色いのかその理由がわかりませんでした。
After returning home, I read a newspaper article 　　about Anuradhapura, by chance.
●たまたま、偶然 　　　　by chance　　　by coincidence
日本に帰国後、 　　私はたまたまアヌラーダプラについての記事を新聞で読みました。
It was about well water with high fluorine concentration.
その記事はフッ素濃度が高い井戸水について書いてありました。
Speaking of fluorine, 　　it has effect of preventing bad teeth. But actually if baby and small children take it too much, 　　they have dental fluorosis with black teeth. I didn't know that.
●fluorine（フローリン）　　フッ素 　fluorosis（フローシス）　　フッ素病 ●アメリカでは塩素のかわりにフッ素を水道水に混ぜているので、 　虫歯にはならないけども、アメリカ国民の１／４がフッ素過剰で 　フッ素症になっているらしい
フッ素といえば、虫歯予防の効果があります。 でも実は乳幼児が過剰に摂取すると、フッ素症になり黒い歯になります。 知りませんでした！
That's why the tap water of Anuradhapura was brown.
だからアヌラーダプラのホテルの水は茶色かったんですね。
I stayed in the hotel, 　　I woke up at 5 o'clock in the next morning 　　by the cry of monkeys, 　　then, I opened my eyes 　　and saw a newt walked on the ceiling.
ホテルに泊まって、私は明朝５時に猿の鳴き声で目を覚まし、 　　目を開けたら、天井にイモリが這っているのが見えました。

At that time, I realized that I was in Sri Lanka, not Japan.

First, I went to Isurumunia Vihara, 　　it's called "Rock temple" in nickname.
まず、私はイスルムニア精舎、通称ロックテンプルに行きました。
I took off my sandals at the entrance, 　　I had to go through the clothes check gate.
入り口でサンダルを脱ぎ、 　　服装を調べるゲートを通らなければなりませんでした。

He looks very young.
彼はとても若く見えますね。
I put on the socks I had prepared 　　and I tried to go through the gate, 　　but I was stopped by the gate staff member.
私は用意してきた靴下をはいて、ゲートを通ろうとしましたが、 　　係りの人に止められてしまいました。
My french sleeve dress had exposed skin, 　　so I had to hide my arms with a shawl.
フレンチスリーブのワンピースは肌を露出しているので、 　　ショールで腕を隠さなければならなかったんです。
Actually, I prepared my shawl, 　　but I left it in the car due to the hot weather.
実はショールを用意していましたが、とても暑くて 　　車に置いてきてしまったんです。
The gate staff member wrapped a big white shawl tightly 　　around my both shoulders……kukukuku !
ゲート係員は、大きな白いショールを私の肩にギュッと巻きつけました。
Oh, really ?　　I've never seen it.  What's kukukuku ?
え〜ほんとに？ 私はそういうのを見たことがありません。  ククククって何ですか？
Actually I don't know the onomatopoeia in English, 　　we say "gyu gyu" in Japanese.
実は私はその擬声語が英語で何というのか知らないんですが、 　　日本語では「ギュッギュッ」と言います。
Okay okay, I understand it.
わかりました、理解しました。
You know, I get hot easily, I was sweating like a horse.
ご存知のように、私は暑がりなので、どっと汗が噴き出しました。
That's why I was very hot, 　　so I tried to put on a parasol at least, 　　I was told "No, no no !." So I had a look around there with sweat
そういうわけでとても暑かったので、せめて日傘をさそうとしたら、 　　「だめだめ」と言われて、私は汗だくで見学しました。
At that time I thought, "This country is quite strict."

Next I went to see "Three Sri Maha Bodhi Tree", 　　there was a clothes check gate there, too.
次に私はスリーマハ菩提樹を見に行きましたが、ここでも服装チェックがありました。
I passed through it with no problems at that time, 　　because I wrapped my own thin cool shawl.
今度は自分の薄い涼しいショールを首に巻いていたので、問題なく通過できました。
"Three Sri Maha Bodhi Tree" 　　is a dividing tree of the bodhi tree 　　that Buddha became enlightened in Buddha-gaya, India. It is said it's the oldest in the world (over 2200 years old).
スリーマハ菩提樹の木は、インドのブッダガヤで仏陀が悟りを開いた 　　菩提樹の分け木で、世界最古（樹齢２２００年以上）と言われています。
I picked up a leaf under the tree and brought it to Japan.
私はその菩提樹の木の下に落ちていた葉っぱを拾って、日本に持ってきました。
This is my treasure.
これは私の宝物です。

By the way, 　　I had a funny experience at the Bodhi Tree Temple 　　by the Bodhi Tree.
ところで菩提樹の木のそばにある菩提樹寺で、私は面白い体験をしました。
First, I was painted white powder on my forehead. 　　My forehead was painted with white powder 　　by a stranger out of the blue, 　　next, I was wrapped with a white thread 　　around my wrist. 　　my wrist was wrapped with a white thread, 　　finally, I was made an offering money.

まず最初に、知らない人にいきなりおでこに白い粉を塗りつけられて、 　　次にあれよあれとという間に手首に白い糸をグルグル巻かれて、 　　最後にお布施をさせられました。
It was very funny that I was made an offering 　　but before I knew it, I had a belly laugh.
いつのまにかお布施をさせられたというのが、面白くて面白くて、 　　お腹を抱えて笑いました。
By the way, "The moment offering experience" 　　was the most interesting memory in Sri Lanka.
実はこの瞬間お布施体験はスリランカで一番面白かった想い出なんですよ。
Next I had a look around Anuradhapura Station.

It was written Anuradhapura Station 　　in Shinhalese, Tamil and English on the signboard.
駅の看板にはシンハラ語とタミル語と英語で 　　アヌラーダプラと書かれていました。
Anuradhapura ……What a nice ringing name it is ! It's just like a magic spell "Abrakadabra,"very similar.
●アブラカダブラ　　世界中で広く用いられている手品ショーでの呪文
アヌラーダプラ……何て響きのいい名前でしょうか！　 まるで魔法の呪文のアブラカダブラのようです、とても似ていますよね。
I bought a 10 rupee station admission ticket.
私は１０ルピーの入場券を買いました。
Wow, so cheap ! Now it's so expensive.
へえ、とても安かったんですね！ 今はとても高いです。
When I had the ticket cut at the tickets gate, 　　the station staff found that I bought it for study, 　　then he guided me around the station.
入場券を改札口で切ってもらったら、 　　その駅員さんは私が見学のために入場券を買ったということがわかって、 　　駅の中をいろいろ案内してくれました。
Besides, he showed me the operation room.
その上、何とオペレーションルームまで見せてくれました。
Wow, this is operation room ? very empty.
へえ〜、これがオペレーションルームですか？　空っぽですね。

駅は混んでいましたか？
This is a time table for Colombo Station. コロンボ駅行きの電車の時刻表です。

みんなとてもフレンドリーな駅員さんばかりで、私はラッキーでした。
At that time I thought, 　　if normally in Japan, 　　there are no station staff members 　　who guides foreigner around station.
私はその時に思いました。 もし通常、日本だったら、外国人に駅の中を案内してくれる 　　駅員さんはいないと。
There were some old machines 　　in from the British colonial era 　　and some new machines in present use.
イギリス植民地時代の古い機械と、現在使われている新しい機械の両方が 　　置いてありました。
It looks like a museum.
博物館みたいに見えますね。
I hate this toilet.
私はこのトイレが大嫌いなんです。
I saw the toilet like this only once. Almost western style toilet.
こんなトイレを見たのは１回だけでした。 ほとんど洋式トイレでした。
When I go to elementary school, they have this, 　　but I can't squat.
小学校に行っていた時にこんなトイレがありましたが、 　　私はスクワットできませんでした。
It's the same as Japanese style toilet.
それは和式トイレと同じですよね。
Ya ya. It's good for body, 　　but it's not easy, we are too big.
そうそう。 体にはいいんですが、体が大き過ぎて、簡単ではありません。
I thought old things were more beautiful than new things.
古い物は新しい物に比べて、美しいと思いました。
Next I went to Mihintale that was 30 minuites drive 　　from the station.
次に私は車で３０分くらいの所にあるミヒンターレに行きました。
Mihintale is a religious place where Buddhism was 　　first introduced in Sri Lanka.
ミヒンターレはスリランカで最初に仏教が伝えられた聖地です。
Thousands of believers gather there 　　from all over the country 　　in on Poyaday(full moon) in June or July.
６〜７月のポヤデー（満月）には何千人という信者が国中からここに集まります。
Days normally say "on" 　　and month "in"
普通、日にちには　onを月には　inをつけます。
People climb the Mihintale mountain, 　　climb rocky mountain on the top 　　and worship the full moon.
人々はミヒンターレの山を登り、頂上の岩山に登り、満月を拝みます。
Then I thought strongly, 　　"I want to come there again someday 　　and see the full moon on the top."
私はその時に「いつの日かもう１度ミヒンターレに来て、 　　頂上で満月を見たい。」と強く思いました。
There were 1883 steps in Mihintale, 　　I went up just 10 steps.
ミヒンターレには１８８３段の階段がありましたが、 　　私はたったの１０段だけ登りました。

My driver laughed at me, "Just 10 steps !"
私のドライバーは「たったの１０段！」と言って笑いました。
Hahahaha.

I visited Isurumuniva Vihara,Three Sri Maha Bodhi Tree, 　　Anuradhapura Station and Mihintale, 　　so I was exhausted.
イスルムニア精舎、スリーマハ菩提樹、アヌラーダプラ駅、そしてミヒンターレを 　　見学して私はバテてしまいました。
I almost got a almost heatstroke, 　　I thought it was already my limit.
私は熱中症の一歩手前みたいになって 　　もう限界だ〜と思いました。
My driver told me, "Next, let's go to Miri Sawati Pagoda." 　　but I said, "I want to take a shower and 　　have a nap in the hotel, 　　then I want to visit there in the cool evening.
ドライバーは「さあ、今度はミリサワティー仏塔に行きましょう。」と言いましたが、 　　私は「ホテルでシャワーしてから昼寝して、 　　夕方涼しくなったら、そこに行きたいです。」と言いました。
The freedom is from personal tour, not group tour.
こんな自由がきくのも、個人旅行だからで、団体旅行ならそんなことはできません。
I took a shower and ate dragon fruit I got at a fruit shop 　　then I had a nap.
私はシャワーをした後、果物屋で買ったドラゴンフルーツを食べてお昼寝しました。
Wow, it looks nice !
わあ、このドラゴンフルーツはおいしそうですね！
Do you remember how much you pay ?
いくら払ったか覚えていますか？
No, I don't.
いいえ、覚えていません。
In Sri Lanka, people don't eat dragon fruit, 　　because it's expensive fruit.
スリランカでは、人々はドラゴンフルーツを食べません、高い果物だからです。

Do you know Hina-Doll's Festival in Japan, sensei ?

	My daughters made these Hina-dolls in their childhood. 私の娘たちが子どもの頃、 作ったひな人形です。
Oh, these were made of toilet paper ?
これはトイレットペーパーで作られたものですか？

	This is a Hina-Doll's Festival at our house. こちらは私たちの家での ひな祭りです。 The menu was Scattered sushi, Japanese fried chicken and Strawberry bavarois. 献立はちらし寿司と 鶏の空揚げと いちごババロアでした。
Now in Japan, 　　we celebrate it on March 3rd in the solar calendar, 　　but when I was a baby, we used to do it 　　March 3rd in the lunar calendar.
現在の日本では、ひな祭りを新暦（太陽暦）の 　　３月３日に祝いますが、 　　私が赤ん坊だった頃には、旧暦（太陰暦）で祝ったものでした。

One was my mother's doll 　　from my grandmother's parents' house 　　and the other was mine from mother's parents' house,, 　　but unfortunatly, 　　my house was caught on fire in my childhood.

In Japan, when mother gives birth to a girl baby, 　　 we have a custom of giving Hina-doll 　　from mother's parents' house.
日本では女の子を出産した時に、母親の実家からひな人形が贈られる 　　習慣があるんです。
Back of the photo says, 　　"It was taken on April 3rd the Showa era 29, 　　10 days after the birthday."
写真の裏には、「誕生の１０日後、昭和２９年４月３日に撮影」と書いてありました。
I was born on the end of March,, 　　so that means, 　　my family used the lunar calendar for Hina-Festival.
私は３月の終わりに生まれました…ということは私の家族はひな祭りに 　　太陰暦を使っていたということになります。
Japanese goverment changed 　　from lunar calendar 　　to solar calendar in 1872 (the Meiji era 5th), 　　150 years ago.
日本政府は今から１５０年前の１８７２年（明治５年）に、 　　暦を太陰暦から太陽暦に変えました。
But in the 1950s(nineteen-fifties), 　　people usually used solar calendar, 　　but they used lunar calendar just for season event 　　unlike now.
でも現代と違って１９５０年代には、たいていは太陽暦を使っていても 　　季節の行事にだけは太陰暦を使っていたということになります。
I think solar calendar is very useful 　　but it doesn't match season event.
太陽暦はとても便利ですが、季節の行事には合わないと思います。
Most asian countries (China, Korea, Taiwan, HongKong, 　　Vietnam,Singapore and so on) still have used 　　lunar calendar for season event, 　　but only Japan has used solar calendar 　　for season event.
アジアのほとんどの国（中国、韓国、台湾、香港、ベトナム、シンガポールなど）は、 　　今でも季節の行事を太陰暦で行いますが、日本だけが太陽暦を採用しています。
When I googled about lunar calendar, 　　I found the interesting thing.
太陰暦についてネットで調べている時に、私は面白いことを見つけました。
New year of lunar calendar has 2 kinds, 　　one is area to celebrate January 1st, 　　and the other is area to celebrate 　　the orbit of the sun enters Aries.
●Aries　（エイリース）　　牡羊座
太陰暦の正月には２種類あって、ひとつは太陰暦の１月１日を祝う地域と 　　もうひとつは太陰暦の、太陽の軌道が牡羊座に入る時期を 　　祝う地域があるということです。
The former is China, Korea, Vietnam, Tibet, Okinawa Japan, 　　the latter is Thailand, Laos, Myanmar and Sri Lanka.
前者は中国、韓国、ベトナム、チベット、日本の沖縄、 　　後者はタイ、ラオス、ミャンマー、そしてスリランカです。

When you told me in the month before last, 　　"New year of Sri Lanka is actually on April 14th," 　　I thought why it is different from China, 　　at that time I understood about it.
