I asked the travel agency to introduce me to an 　　expert of Sri Lanka and south India 　　including the home visit in my travel.
スリランカ・南インド専門の旅行社に 　　家庭訪問を旅行に組み込むことを頼んであったんです。
I experienced cooking Sri Lankan curry 　　with the family there.
私はその家で、家族の皆さんと一緒にスリランカカレーを 　　作る体験をしてきました。
The house was in the high class area 　　in the suburbs, 　　1 hour and a half from Colombo by the car.
その家は、コロンボから車で１時間半くらいの郊外の 　　高級住宅街にありました。
A tuk tuk parked in by the wall fence, 　　so I asked my driver, 　　"Is this house the owner of tuk tuk company ?" Then, he said, 　　"No, they owns the tuk tuk with a driver."
塀の内側に、トゥクトゥクが停車していたので、 　　私はドライバーにたずねました、 　　「この家はトゥクトゥク会社のオーナーの家ですか？」 　　すると彼は「いいえ、この家の人はドライバーつきのトゥクトゥクを 　　所有しているんですよ。」と教えてくれました。
We promised to visit at noon, 　　but we arrived at 11:00, 1 hour ago earlier. So anyway, I asked 　　the family to visit at 11:00 　　if I could visit the family at 11:00 　　 in spite of being too early. She said, "No problem. Please come in."
私たちは正午に訪問する約束でしたが、 　　１時間前の早く１１時に到着してしまいました。 それで、かなり早かったんですが、 　　家の人に一応１１時でもいいかきいてみたら、 　　「大丈夫ですよ。どうぞお入り下さい。」と言われました。

The family was 6 members,father, mother, 　　daughter,her cousin, 　　her 2 aunts(father's sisters). Even if they cook lots of curry, 　　it won't be left over because of big family.
その家は、お父さん・お母さん・娘さん（一人娘）・いとこ・ 　　おばさん２人（お父さんの姉と妹）の６人家族でした。 大家族なので、たくさんカレーを作っても余らないそうです。
Her father was working, 　　her mother went for shopping, 　　so the daughter, a high school student, 　　took care of me.
お父さんは仕事、お母さんは買い物に行っていて、 　　高校生の娘さんがお世話してくれました。

The daughter was studying 　　to be a doctor in the future.
その娘さんは、将来、お医者さんになるために勉強していました。

She told me, 　　"I have not showered yet, 　　so may I take a shower ?"
その娘さんは私に言いました。 　　「まだシャワーをしてないので、シャワーしてきてもいいですか？」

I said,"Sure, sure, take your time. 　　and apologized, "I'm sorry. I came too early."
私は「どうぞどうぞ、ごゆっくり。」と言って、 　　「ごめんなさい。早く来てしまって。」と謝りました。

The ceiling fans were spinning inside the house. When we moved the rooms, she turned off the fans. I thought she was very conscious of energy saving.
家の中では天井のファン（扇風機）が回っていました。 私たちが部屋の移動の時には、彼女はファンを消していました。 とても省エネ意識が高いと思いました。
It's very normal in Sri Lanka.
スリランカではそれは普通のことなんです。
Parents shout if you don't switch off. My mom always shout, "Switch off the fan !" 　　"Switch off the light !"
親はもしスイッチを消さなかったら叫びます。 私の母はいつも「ファンを消して！」「電気を消して！」とか叫んでいます。

We introduced each other, 　　then we cooked in the kitchen.

Her father was out for work, there was his photo. He had been studying Japanese 　　at the Embassy of Japan, 　　for over 30 years from 1984 to 2016. Her father is from Kandy, 　　his work was a Japanese tourist guide.
お父さんは仕事で不在でしたが、写真がありました。 日本大使館で１９８４年から３０年以上、日本語を習っていましした。 お父さんはキャンディ出身で、仕事は日本語ガイドでした。

The daughter called his her father 　　for me on purpose, 　　I talked to him in Japanese, 　　he was just like real Japanese. He told me, 　　"My old Japanese friend is 99 years old now."
娘さんはわざわざ私のためにお父さんに電話してくれて、 　　私は彼と日本語で話しましたが、まるで日本人のようでした。 彼は「私の日本の古い友達は、現在９９歳です。」と話していました。

Dhal were small beans, 　　so we don't need to soak in water.
●dhal　（ダル）　ヒンディー語で豆の意味。レンズ豆のこと。
ダルは小さい豆なので、水でふやかす必要がありませんでした。
Well, let me explain about dal.
ここでダル（レンズ豆）について説明させて下さい。
Dal is one of the 5 healthy foods in the world. It is rich in iron, so it's for prevention of anemia. And it is rich in vitamins, 　　so it's for recovery from exhaustion.
ダルは世界の５大健康食品のひとつです。 鉄分が豊富に含まれているので、貧血予防になります。 またビタミン類も豊富で、疲労回復になります。

They are olive oil from Spain, 　　greek yogurt, korean kimchi and Japanese soybeans.

I had not cooked for a long time since I traveled, 　　so I was happy to cook 　　for the first time in a while..
私は旅行に来て以来、長い間料理をしていませんでしたから、 　　久しぶりに料理してうれしかったです。
We cooked curry on the gas stove 　　from small propane gas cylinders. Lighting the gas with a match reminds me 　　of the nostalgic stove in my childhood.
小さなプロパンガスボンベの上のガス台でカリーを作りました。 マッチで火をつけたので、 　　私は子どもの頃の懐かしいガスコンロを思いだしました。
We cooked 4 kinds of curry on that day.
私たちはその日、４種類のカリーを作りました。
Her cousin put coconut oil in a frying pan 　　and heated it.
娘さんのいとこさんがフライパンにココナッツ油を入れて温めました。
The amount of oil was low, so I asked the daughter, 　　"I have been to Pakistan, 　　they used oil more and more." She told me, "In the Islamic countries, 　　they use lots of oil, but in Sri Lanka, 　　we use it a little."
油の量が少なかったので、私は娘さんに言いました。 　　「私はパキスタンに行ったことがありますが、もっともっと油を 　　たくさん使いました。」 彼女は「イスラム教の国では大量の油を使うけど、スリランカでは 　　少ししか使いません。」と言いました。
I thought, that's why Sri Lankan curry was light. Both of curryies with lots of oil 　　and a little oil are tasty, 　　but a little oil curry is good for old person like me.
だから、スリランカのカレーはあっさりしているんだと思いました。 油をたくさん使うカレーも少ししか使わないカレーも 　　どっちもそれぞれおいしいんですが、私のような年寄りには 　　あっさりしたカレーはうれしいです。
The screen is black, but we can listen the voice.
画面は暗いんですが、声が聴けます。
In Japan, we simmer the meat and vegetable 　　after frying them, 　　but in Sri Lanka,they simmer them 　　after dressing them with curry powder and spice.
日本では肉や野菜をフライパンで炒めてから煮込みますが、 　　スリランカでは野菜をカレー粉やスパイスで和えてから、 　　煮ていました。
This is curry powder, 　　it smelled better than Japanese curry powder.
これはカレー粉ですが、日本のカレー粉よりもずっといい香りがしました。
I've never seen this Japanese curry powder. I only see curry roux.
私は日本のカレー粉を見たことがありません。 カレーのルーしか見たことがありません。
Curry powder is mixed spice.
カレー粉はスパイスをミックスしたものです。

Ya, in the supermarket.

I recognized the lid of the bottle with spice. It was a bottle of sea-weed preserved 　　in soy sauce 　　called "Nori no tukudani" in Japanese. I saw it, I wanted to eat it on just cooked rice. After all, I'm a typical Japanese.
このスパイスをいれてあったビンのふたには見覚えがありました。 日本の海苔の佃煮のビンでした。 私はそれを見て、炊き立てご飯に海苔の佃煮を食べたくなりました。 やっぱり私は典型的な日本人です。

Norinotukudani is one of traditional 　　Japanese foods with rice.
海苔の佃煮は日本の伝統的なご飯のお供のひとつです。

What kind of the taste ?

Salty taste. It's a salty seaweed jam.
塩辛い味です。 しょっぱい海藻のジャムです。
Her dad works with Japanese people, 　　so he gets Japanese food.
彼女のお父さんは日本人と仕事をしているので、 　　日本の食べ物をもらうんでしょうね。
These are boiled potatoes. They simmered potatoes in the pot 　　after dressing with curry powder and spice.
これらはゆでたじゃが芋です。 ゆでたじゃが芋をカレーパウダーやスパイスで和えてから、鍋で煮ていました。
This is coconut milk in the pot.
この鍋の中に入っているのはココナッツキリ（ココナッツミルクのこと）です。
This long vegetable is a bean called "Drum stick" 　　I had never seen it in Japan. You know, we can't eat bean pod like edamame, 　　I ate only the beans with my teeth like edamame.
この長い野菜は、ドラムスティックという豆で、 　　日本では見たことがありませんでした。 ご存知のように、この豆は枝豆と同じ様に、さやは食べられませんから、 　　枝豆のように歯で中身だけを食べました。

I like it. 私はこれが好きです。
It's not easy to eat drum stick 　　because of long length, 　　we cut it into finger-length pieces.
ドラムスティックは長くて食べにくいので、指くらいの長さに切りました。
This is Papadam is made from flour made in India. They deep fryed them with oil 　　and eat them with curry.
これはインド製のパパダンというもので、小麦粉で作られています。 油で揚げて、カレーに混ぜて食べました。
This video is that they were deep 　　frying the papadan with oil. They used a ladle with holes, 　　but I wanted to use cooking 　　chopsticks for Japanese.
この動画はパパダンを油で揚げているところです。 穴あきお玉を使っていますが、日本人の私は菜箸を使いたくなりました。
The daughter asked me, 　　"Do you have spicy food?" 　　then, I answered her,"Sure !"
娘さんが私に「スパイシーな食べ物を食べますか？」と 　　たずねたので、私は「もちろん！」と答えています。
Her mother came back home 　　and made 100% fresh 100 % 　　watermelon juice by blender.
お母さんが買い物から帰ってきて、ミキサーでフレッシュな 　　１００％西瓜ジュースを作ってくれました。
Her mother brought me the juice, 　　and said, "Suika Juce" in Japanese. So I said, "Oishii〜(tasty)" in Japanese, too.
お母さんは私にその西瓜ジュースを持ってきてくれ、 　　日本語で「スイカジュース！」と言いました。 それで私も「おいし〜い」と日本語で言いました。
Hahaha.

She was cooking a salad 　　called Sanbol in Shinhalese. She peeled the big cucumber and sliced.
彼女はサラダ（シンハラ語でサンボル）を作っていました。 大きなきゅうりの皮をむいてから、うすく切りました。
In the middle of cooking, 　　the daughter showed me the 3rd floor. The balcony was very nice, full of flowers.
料理の途中でしたが、３階を見せて頂きました。 バルコニーはお花がいっぱいで、とても素敵でした。

Yes, my mom has them a lot. And they fall and break by the strong wind.
はい、私の母もたくさん鉢を置いてますよ。 強い風で落ちて壊れます。

When we saw the street in front of the house, 　　a mobile sales wagon came there. It sell sold some foods or general goods.
バルコニーで前の通りを見ていたら、移動販売車が来ました。 ちょっとした食べ物や雑貨を売りにくるそうです。
I told the daughter and her mother, 　　"In Japan,some kinds of 　　mobile sales wagon, too. For example,stone-roasted sweet potato shop, 　　ramen stand, icecream stand, 　　kerosene delivery truck, 　　clothes pole truck and so on, 　　each their music is different.
私は娘さんとお母さんに 　　「日本でも同じように、いろいろな移動販売車が来ます。 例えば 　　石焼き芋屋・夜泣きラーメン・アイスクリーム屋・ 　　灯油屋・さおだけ屋など 　　いろいろあって、それぞれ全部音楽が違います。」と言いました。
Then, I was singing the songs, 　　her mother laughted a lot.
それから私がそれらの歌 　　（石焼き芋屋と夜泣きラーメン屋とさおだけ屋） 　　を歌ってみせたら、お母さんは大笑いしました。
Have you ever heard 　　"♪I〜shi ya〜ki imo〜　yakiimo♪"?
先生は「♪石焼〜き芋〜焼き芋♪」を聴いたことがありますか？

Sao means laundry pole.
さおというのは洗濯物を干すさおのことです。

There are lots of ramen stand in Osaka.
大阪には多くのラーメン屋台がありますよ。
I was surprised that there were 2 religions, 　　Buddhism and Hinduism in one home. The family members were supposed 　　to be Buddhists 　　I thought why did they put a hindu god, 　　so I asked her about it, 　　she told me, 　　"Because Buddha is one of 　　thousands hindu gods."
驚いたのは１つの家に仏教とヒンズー教が 　　同居していたということでした。 ここの家の家族は仏教徒のはずなのに、 　　なぜヒンズー教の神様も置いてあるのか、 　　娘さんにきいてみたら、 　　「仏陀は数千いるヒンズーの神々の中の１人だからです。」と 　　言いました。
It was interesting 　　that Sri Lanka was similar to Japan, 　　Buddhim and Shinto in 1 house.
仏教と神道が１つの家に同居している（神仏混合）日本と 　　よく似ているのがおもしろかったです。

She called this yellow flower, "Kandian dancer".
娘さんはこの黄色い花を「キャンディアンダンサー」と呼んでいました。
I thought why is it called such a name, 　　so when I looked at the flower petal, 　　it was just like real Kandian dancer ! What a coincidence made by nature.
なぜそんな名前がつけられているのかなと 　　1つの花びらをよく見ると、ドレスを着た 　　本物のキャンディアンダンサーにそっくりでした！ 自然が作った偶然ですね。
This is a studying place of the daughter 　　who was a high school student. It was cool, so she concentrated on her studies.
ここは高校生の娘さんの勉強コーナーです。 涼しくて勉強がはかどるでしょうね。
The lunch was ready. The menu was rice, dal curry, fish curry, 　　drumstick curry, potato curry, 　　cucumber sanbol (salad),and curd(yogurt).
お昼ごはんができました。 メニューは白いご飯、豆のカリー、魚のカリー、 　　ドラムスティックカリー、じゃが芋のカリー、 　　きゅうりサンボル（サラダ）、 　　そしてデザートのカード（ヨーグルト）でした。
This is a drumstick curry. It was yellow 　　because it was simmered with coconut milk, 　　not with water. We couldn't eat it with spoon, 　　because we had to eat just beans 　　by hand like edamame. It tasted sweet and tasty. It was pitty that I can't eat it in Japan.
これはドラムスティックカリーです。 水のかわりにココナッツミルクで煮るので、黄色いカレーでした。 ドラムスティックカレーはスプーンでは食べられませんでした、 　　手で枝豆のように豆だけを食べなければならないからです。 甘くて本当においしい豆でした。 日本で食べられないのが残念。
	Young soybeans called "Edamame" in Japanese 日本語で枝豆と呼ばれている 若い大豆です。
Kids like it, 　　it's not so spicy.
子どもたちが好きなカレーですよ、そんなに辛くないですからね。
This is a potato curry. Their taste were quite different from potato 　　in　Japanese curry. They put maldive fish in the curry 　　like dried bonito in Japan. Vegitable curry has no taste 　　compared to meat or fish curry, 　　so they use maldive fish for the broth.
これはポテトカリーです。 日本のカレーの中のじゃが芋とは全然違う味でした。 日本のかつお節のようなモルディブフィッシュを入れました。 野菜のカレーは肉や魚のカレーと違って、味がないので 　　味だしのためにモルディブフィッシュを使います。
Maldive fish was named after Maldives 　　close to Sri Lanka.
モルディブフィッシュはスリランカの近くのモルディブが 　　その産地なので、モルディブフィッシュと名づけられています。
Actually Japanese dried bonito 　　might be from Maldives. Long time ago, 　　it was brought from Maldives via Southeast Asia, 　　then it was added the molding process in Japan.
実は日本のかつお節にはモルディブ起源説があります。 昔、モルディブから東南アジアを経由して日本にもたらされ、 　　その後、日本でさらに「カビづけ」という工程が加えられました。
This is a dal curry. The dal curry at the family had a mild taste 　　like home cooking.
これはダルカリーです。 ここのお宅のダルカリーは家庭料理らしく、やさしい味でした。
This is a fish curry. It was brown 　　because it was simmered with water. I liked the fish curry the best. My driver liked it, too.
これはフィッシュカリーです。 水で煮るので、色が茶色かったです。 私はこのフィッシュカリーが一番好きでした。 ドライバーもこれが一番好きでした。
This is a cucumber sanbol (salad). It was light and delicious with onion, salt and lime.
これはキューカンバーサンボル（サラダ）です。 玉ねぎと塩とライムで味つけしてあり、 　　あっさりとしてとてもおいしかったです。
These are papadan like brown senbei.
茶色いおせんべいのようなものはパパダンです。

I can't always come to Sri Lanka, 　　so I tried to eat the curry by hand.
私はせっかくスリランカに来たので、手でカリーを食べるのに挑戦してみました。
Like a true Sri Lankan, very nice.
本当のスリランカ人のようですね、とてもいいですよ。
I asked my driver, 　　"I have never eaten it by hand, 　　so can you show me how to do it ?" He ate it with hand very well. He was indeed Sri Lankan.
私はドライバーに頼みました「手で食べるのは生まれて初めてだから、 　　お手本を見せてくれる？」 彼はとても上手に手で食べました。 彼はさすがにスリランカ人でした。
To my surprise, eating with my hand was 　　better than eating with a spoon.
驚いたことに、スプーンで食べるよりも手で食べた方がおいしかったです。
Ya, that's true. Eating by hand is better.
ええ、本当にそうですよ。 手で食べる方がおいしい。
The dessert was curd that was yogurt 　　made from buffalo milk. There was coconut honey, 　　but this time, I didn't use it, 　　I ate mango mixed with curd.
デザートはカード（水牛ヨーグルト）でした。 ヤシ蜜がありましたが、 　　今回は蜜をかけずに、マンゴーをカードに混ぜて食べました。
After lunch, I drank a cup of Kirite (milk tea).
食後、キリティー（ミルクティー）を飲みました。
The home visit was an appointment for 2 hours 　　from noon to 2:00 p.m. I said to the daughter, 　　"It's 2 o'clock as appointed time, 　　so it's time to say good-bye. 　　It's time to have lunch for your family." But she said, "No problem, please stay longer."
家庭訪問は１２時〜２時まで２時間の約束でした。 私は娘さんに 　　「約束の２時になったので、もうおいとまする時間です。 　　ご家族の皆さんのランチの時間ですから。」と言いました。 すると彼女は「大丈夫ですから、もっと居て下さい。」と言いました。
I told her, "Thank you for your kind offer, 　　please let me stay a little longer." She and I talked in the computer room on the 3rd floor.
私は彼女に言いました、 　　「ではお言葉に甘えて、もう少しお邪魔させて下さいね。」 彼女と私は３階のパソコンルームで話しました。
She told me, 　　"I watched the Japanese TV drama 　　named "Carnation". It was morning drama by NHK broadcasted in 2011. She watched famous morning drama 　　named "Oshin,"of course. Have you ever watched them, sensei ?
彼女は私に 　　「日本の”カーネーション”というテレビドラマをずっと見ていました。」 　　と言いました。 カーネーションは２０１１年に放送されたNHKの朝のドラマでした。 もちろん有名な”おしん”も見たそうです。 先生はそれらの番組を見たことがありますか？
No.
いいえ、見たことがありません。

Well, Oshin was very poor, ………??? Actually I have never watched the drama 　　even though Japanese.

Really ? Okay okay. It's a poor family's story.
そうなんですか？　オーケーオーケー。 貧しい家族の話なんですね。
I told her about yellow jacket nest in Sigiriya Rock. Then she said, 　　"There are some foolish Sri Lankan people 　　who throw stones at the nest."
私は娘さんにシギリアロックのスズメバチの巣の話をしました。 すると彼女は「スリランカ人の中には、ハチの巣に石を投げる馬鹿が 　　いるんです。」と言いました。
Yes, that's true.
はい、それは本当です。
When she and I talked, 　　her mother brought the curry, 　　and fed her by hand like a small child. I was surprised to see that, 　　I was happy to see the warm scene of the family.
娘さんと私が話しをしていたら、 　　お母さんがカレーを持ってきて、彼女に小さな子どものように 　　手で食べさせてあげていました。 私はそれを見て驚きましたが、 　　家族の温かい情景を見てうれしかったです。
She asked me, "Have you ever been to jeep safari ?" 　　I said, "No, I have not." Then, she said, "It's a waste." 　　and she showed me some animals 　　 in Sri Lanka on line.
彼女は私に「ジープサファリに行きましたか？」と聞いたので、 　　私は「行きませんでした。」と答えました。 すると彼女は「それはもったいない。」とスリランカの動物 　　をパソコンで見せてくれました。
A 2 hour appointment turned into 4 hours. Thank you for a long time.
２時間（１２時〜２時）の予定だったのに、 　　４時間（１１時〜３時）になってしまいました。 長時間ありがとうございました。
On our way to back to the hotel, 　　when we went from narrow street to big street, 　　our car was stopped by a police officer 　　and my driver was taken out side of the car.
ホテルに帰る途中、 　　小さな通りから大きい通りに出た途端、車が警察官に 　　止められて、ドライバーが車の外に連れていかれました。
When he came back, I asked him, 　　"What's the matter ?" He looked down and was silent, 　　so asked him, 　 　　"Did you do against the traffic rule ?"
車に帰ってきたので、私は「どうした？」とたずねました。 彼がもじもじしていたので、私は彼に「交通違反した？」と 　　言いました。
Then, he answered, "Yes." I said, "You have to pay a fine ? How much ?" 　　he said with a depressed face, 　　"I have to pay 1100 rupees by tomorrow."
すると彼は「はい。」と言ったので、 　　私が「罰金を払わなければならない？　いくら？」とたずねると、 　　彼は「１１００ルピーを明日までに払わなければならない。」と 　　しょんぼりした顔で言いました。
I thought earning 1100 rupees was hard wark, 　　what a waste !,
１１００ルピーを稼ぐのは大変なのに……もったいない……。
We arrived at the hotel, 　　when I had a rest in bed, 　　I couldn't lie on my back for back pain.
夕方、ホテルに到着して、ベッドで休もうとしたら、 　　腰が痛くて、仰向けに寝れませんでした。
So I decided to go to hospital with travel insurance. But in Sri Lanka,there was not the branch 　　of Sonpo Japan Insurance, 　　so I called Singaporean branch, 　　I made an appointment with a hospital 　　near the hotel at 10:30 a.m. the next day.
そこで私は旅行保険を使って病院に行くことにしました。 スリランカには旅行会社の支店がなかったので、 　　シンガポール支店に電話して、翌日の１０時半に近くの病院に 　　予約を入れてもらいました。
