神様の綱引きー 男神　対　女神 〜第１回鹿島の森伝説　越前・加賀県境綱引き〜

First I'm talking about an early Japanese legend.
まず私は古代日本のある伝説を話そうと思います。
It is "The Legend of Kashima-Forest".
それは”鹿島の森伝説”です。

では始めましょうか？
Long long ago, there were a god in Etizen Fukui, and a goddess in Kaga Ishikawa.
昔むか〜し、越前には男の神様（男神）、加賀には女の神様（女神）がいました。
One day, when they looked down at the earth from heaven, suddenly Mt. Hakusan erupted and it was smoking.
ある日のこと、彼らが天界から下界を見下ろしていたら、 突然、白山が噴火して、煙がもうもうと立ち上がりました。

Then, the smoke made their eyes sting, one big teardrop dripped down to the earth.
その時、煙が目に染みて、彼らの目から一粒の大きな涙が下界にこぼれました。

The fallen teardrop was turned into a small island.
その落ちた一粒の涙は小さな島となりました。

Then, some trees were coming up on the island, and growing up for years.
それから、何本かの木が島に生えて来て、長い年月の間に成長しました。
It was called "Kashima-Forest".
それは”鹿島の森”と呼ばれました。
It was very beautiful, so Etizen-God and Kaga-Goddess scrambled for it.
鹿島の森はとても美しかったので、越前の男神と加賀の女神で取り合いになりました。

They decided to fight by tug of war.
彼らは綱引きで戦うことにしました。
Etizen-God used a chain and Kaga-Goddess used her hair.
越前の男神は鎖を、加賀の女神は自らの髪の毛を使いました。
Tug of war, Ready set go ! ! !
綱引き開始！！！
They pulled a rope against each other, finally the Goddess won.
彼らはお互いに綱を引っ張り合い、最後には女神が勝ちました。
After all , women are strong, aren't they?
やっぱり女は強いですよね？
When the God lost, he fell on his backside.
男神は負けた時に尻もちをついてしまいました。

At that time, there was a huge hole on the ground.
その時、地面に巨大な穴が開きました。
There was a pool of water in the hole, it was called "Lake-Kitakatako".
その穴には水がたまり、北潟湖と呼ばれました。
And Kaga-Goddess got "Kashima-Forest".
そして加賀の女神が”鹿島の森”を手に入れましたとさ。
The end.

Well, there was a tug of war event in the border between Etizen-Awara-city and Kaga-city on this last Sunday according to 　　"The Legend of Kashima-Forest". This time, it was the first event.
さて、今週の日曜日に”鹿島の森伝説”に基づいて、越前芦原市と加賀市の県境で、綱引きのイベントがありました。 今回が第１回目のイベントです。
Etizen-Awara-citizen and Kaga-citizen fought a tug of war.
越前芦原市民と加賀市民が綱引きで戦いました。

That's an interesting idea, right?
それは面白い発想ですよね？
Opening ceremony and tag of war were held in front of "Border line building".
開会式と綱引きは”県境の館”前で行われました。
Actually it was constructed at between Etizen-Awara-city and Kaga-city.
実はその建物は越前芦原市と加賀市にまたがって建てられています。
The area is in the rate of 7(Etizen-Awara) to 3(Kaga).
その面積の割合は越前芦原市側が７割、加賀市側が３割です。
That's why, the cost of construction was paid by 2 cities in the rate of 7 to 3, too.
だからその建設費も２つの市によって、７対３の割合で支払われました。
Etizen-Awara-mayor greated, "Border town is the image of deserted town, but now we have a good chance because of this event."
越前芦原市長があいさつしました 「県境の町はさびれた町のイメージですが、このイベントは我々にとって、いいチャンスです。」
Next, Kaga-mayor greated, "We are going to win the competition because Etizen-Awara-player will laugh during tag of war when they saw me making up my face."
次に加賀市長があいさつしました、「我々がこの対決で勝ちます。なぜならば、越前芦原の選手は綱引きの間、 私の化粧した顔を見て笑うからです。」
Etizen-Awara-mayor disguised as a Etizen-God, Kaga-mayor disguised as a Kaga-Goddess.
越前芦原市長は越前の男神に、加賀市長は加賀の女神に変装しました。
Etizen-Awara and Kaga city politician disguised as a Miko, they were cheerleaders.
越前芦原市と加賀市の市会議員は巫女（みこ）に変装して、応援団長をしていました。
There were lots of competition from chidren to adults between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm.
午前１１時から午後２時まで、子供から大人までたくさんの対戦がありました。
And last there was a "Legend tag of war" by all-star team.
そして最後に選抜チームによる”神話綱引き”がありました。
The competition was the best two out of three.
それは３本勝負でした。
Etizen-Awara-team's leader was mayor-Mr. Hashimoto and Kaga-team's was mayor-Mr.Miyamoto.
越前芦原チームのリーダーは橋本市長、加賀チームのリーダーは宮本市長でした。
The man standing between Etizen-God and Kaga-Goddess is a Judge.
越前男神と加賀女神の間に立っているのは、行司(審判）さんです。
Etizen-Awara-team's member have a hat shaped like hot spring pail , Kaga-team' member have Japanese towel on their head and wear kimono apron and made up on their face like women.
越前芦原チームのメンバーは温泉おけの形をした帽子をかぶり、 加賀チームのメンバーは日本手ぬぐいを頭にかぶり、割烹着を着て、 女の様に化粧していました。
Awara is famous for its hot spring.
芦原は温泉で有名なのです。
Kaga's supporter cheered them "You are beautiful !"
加賀の応援団は「きれいやぞ！」と応援しました。
And Kaga's cheerleader dressed up like a woman said, "If you lose, I'll kiss you."
そして女装した加賀の応援団長は「負けたらチューするよ〜」と言いました。
The judge said, "Are you ready ? 　Ready go ! 　　Pull a rope !"
行司さんが言いました、「用意はいいですか？　よ〜い、スタート！　引け〜！」
The first round , Kaga won.
１回戦は加賀が勝ちました。
The second round , Kaga won again.
２回戦も加賀が勝ちました。
Kaga was the winner like "The Legent of Kashima-Forest".
加賀が”鹿島伝説”のように勝者となりました。
Kaga could expanded their territory.
加賀は領土を拡大できました。
But it was not real, of course.
でも、もちろんそれは本当ではありません。
Kaga moved a stone-monument 1 meter to Etizen territory in joke.
冗談で、加賀は越前の領土に１ｍ石のモニュメントを移動したのです。
Then, there was an interesting thing.
その時に、おもしろいことがありました。
When we win the competition, we usually get a prize.
勝負に勝ったら、私たちは普通、賞品をもらいますよね。
So, Kaga-team moved the monument to Kaga territory first.
だから、加賀チームは最初、加賀の領土にそのモニュメントを間違えて移動したんです。
It was an illusion, wasn't it?
それって錯覚ですよね？

The monument is 110 kg weight.
そのモニュメントは重さ１１０kgです。
If Kaga continue to win for 20000 years, Kaga will be able to get "Tozinbo".
もし加賀が２万年間、勝ち続ければ、東尋坊を手に入れることができるんですよ。
Anyway, Mr.Hashimoto Etizen-Awara mayor said, "We lost the conpetition because of Kaga-Goddess's funny face. It was their strategy. We are going to recover our territory next year definitely !"
橋本越前芦原市長が言いました。 「我々が負けたのは、加賀市長の面白い顔のせいです。 これは彼らの作戦でした。 来年は絶対に領土を取り返します。」
The Border-Center director talled us , "A university proffesor came here all the way from Kagoshima 　　and stayed in Awara-hotspring yesterday. He is making study in tag of war."
県境の館の館長さんは私達に言いました。 「昨日、はるばる鹿児島から大学の先生がここにいらっしゃって、芦原温泉に泊まられたんですよ。 彼は綱引きの研究をしているんです。」
When I got home, I searched for imformation about him on line.
家に帰ってから、私はインターネットでその先生について検索してみました。
He makes a special study of sports cultural anthropology.
彼はスポーツ文化人類学を専門にしています。

I think this event must be interesting for him.
このイベントは彼にとって興味深いことに違いないと私は思います。
Anyway, we were going to go home as soon as the event finished.
ところでそのイベントが終わったらすぐに、私たちは家に帰るつもりでした。

But after the event, we went to see "Kashima-Forest" scrunbled between God and Goddess.
でもそのイベントの後で、私たちは男神と女神の間で取り合いになった”鹿島の森”を見に行きました。
In the old days, it was an island, but it was covered by earth and sand for years, so now we can go to there by land.
昔は島でしたが、長い年月の間に土砂で埋まり、今は陸続きで行くことができます。
There were lots of people at the event, but no one was there.
イベントにはたくさんの人々がいましたが、そこには誰もいませんでした。
Kashima-Forest is 30 meters above sea level, 600 meters around, and shaped an oval.
鹿島の森は海抜（標高）が３０ｍ、周囲が６００ｍで楕円形です。
It was used as holy land from the Heian-period to the Edo-period.
そこは平安時代から江戸時代まで、霊場として使われていました。
That's why, no one was allowed to cut trees in the forest for hundreds of years.
だからこの森では何百年も木を切ることが禁止されていたのです。
Luckily, we could see some "Akate-crab"in the forest.
幸運なことに私たちは”アカテ蟹”を見ることができました。
Akate means red hand.
アカテというのは赤い手という意味です。
Akate-crab is a valuable land-crab living in the Kashima-forest
アカテガニは鹿島の森に生息する貴重な陸蟹なのです。
The Kashima-forest was so quiet and peaceful place.
鹿島の森はとても静かで平和なところでした。
Well, a tug of war was so fun, besides, there were lots of interesting things.
それで綱引きはとても楽しかったんですが、その他にも面白いことがたくさんありました。
Some children played a operetta "Rennyo's Life" at the opening celemony.
開会式で子供たちが”蓮如の生涯”というオペレッタを演じました。
Actually Yoshizaki-town Awara-city is famous for its famous monk "Rennyo".
実は芦原市吉崎町は、有名なお坊さんの”蓮如さん”で有名なんです。
Rennyo escaped from Kyoto to Yoshizaki because he was persecuted by Enryakuzi-Temple in the Muromati period.
室町時代に、蓮如は延暦寺から迫害を受けていたので、京都から吉崎まで逃げてきたのでした。
He propagated to people easily, so he was very popular.
彼は人々にわかりやすく布教し、とても人気がありました。
Those little actor and actress played very well, and they were so cute.
その小さな役者たちはとても上手に演じ、そしてとても可愛かったです。
I think they practiced a lot.
彼らはたくさん練習したんだと思います。
Especially, the girl played the part of Rnnyo's mother was great aｃtress.
特に蓮如のお母さん役の女の子は、素晴らしい女優さんでした。
It must be hard for her to remember so much lines.
とてもたくさんのセリフを覚えるのは、彼女にとって大変だったのに違いありません。
This is a bronze statue of Rennyo and Yoshizaki-temple's monk.
これは蓮如さんと吉崎寺のお坊さんの銅像です。
When Yoshizaki-town was on fire in 1474, the monk carried Rennyo on his back and escaped.
１４７４年、吉崎町が火事になった時に、そのお坊さんは蓮如を背負って逃げたのです。
By the way, do you know why does Akate-crub's hand red color?
ところで赤手蟹（アカテカニ）の手がなぜ赤いのか知っていますか？
Actually Akate-crub has connection with Rennyo, too.
実は赤手蟹も蓮如と関係があるんです。
When Yoshizaki-town was on fire, lots of crubs tried to help Rennyo, but they got burnt on their hand..
吉崎町が火事になった時に、たくさんの蟹たちが蓮如を助けようとして、手に火傷をしたのです。
From then on, those crub's hand became to be red at Yoshizaki.
その時から、吉崎の蟹の手は赤くなりました。
Rennyo was loved from even crub, wasn't he?
蓮如さんは蟹にさえ、慕われていたんですね〜。
Some women read aloud "The Legend of Kashima Forest".
何人かの女性が”鹿島の森伝説”を朗読してくれました。

Those readers were very nice.
その朗読者の方々はとても素晴らしかったです。
And we had a mixed yakisoba including cattlefish at stand for lunch.
そして昼食には屋台でイカ入りのミックス焼きそばを食べました。
The cattlefish was catched in there, of course.
そのイカはもちろん、地元で捕られたものでした。
What a wonderful event it was !　　 I recommend you'll visit there next year.
何て素晴らしいイベントだったでしょう！　 来年はぜひ行かれることをお勧めします。
