〜60歳からの英語でおしゃべり日記〜

I'm talking about the first half of the topics today.
今日はトピックスの前半を話そうと思います。
Ishikawa International Association was looking for some foreign homestay students in Ishikawa pref. and host family wanted to join the Home-Visit Program on line.
石川県国際交流協会は、ホームビジットプログラムに参加したい石川県内の留学生と ホストファミリーをインターネットで募集していました。
When I found the want ad, I thought Sri Lankan student might come to our home.
その募集広告を見つけた時、私はスリランカの学生が家に来てくれるかもしれないと思いました。

I e-mail to Ishikawa International Association. "I hope Sri Lankan student will come if you can."
私は石川県国際交流協会に、出来ればスリランカの学生を希望しますとイーメールしました。
Luckily last Saturday, a Sri Lankan student came to our house and stayed 1 night with us.
運のいいことに、先週の土曜日に一人のスリランカ人学生が私達の家に来て、1泊していきました。
According to the profile, he is 20 years old, he has studied Japanese in Kanazawa since last April.
プロフィールによると、彼は２０歳で去年の４月から金沢で日本語を勉強しているとのことでした。
His mother tongue is Sinhala, and he can speak English and Japanese, too.
母国語はシンハラ語で、英語と日本語も話せます。

His Japanese level was almost 0 until last winter.
彼の日本語のレベルは去年の冬まで、ほとんど０でした。
His religion is Buddhism
宗教は仏教です。
He has parents and one elder sister and 3 dogs.
ご両親、１人のお姉さん、そして３匹の犬がいます。
His father is Japanese guide in Sri Lanka, mother is housewife and sister is studying in university to become a primary school teacher.
お父さんはスリランカで日本語ガイド、お母さんは主婦、 そしてお姉さんは大学で小学校の先生になるために勉強しています。

His hobby was playing the Cricket in Sri Lanka, but he can’t it in Japan, so now he often watch American movies.
スリランカではクリケットをするのが趣味でしたが、日本では出来ないので、今はアメリカ映画をよく見ています。
After eating lunch, we talked about my exciting trip to Sri Lanka while looking at my homepage on line.
昼ごはんの後、私たちはインターネットで私のホームページを見ながら、 楽しかったスリランカの旅について話しました。
I confirmed some information from my driver in Sri Lanka, because I don’t have confidence in the listening.
私は聞き取りに自信がないので、スリランカでドライバーから聞いた情報を確かめました。
For example, about Sri Lankan hero, color of the track, tree tomato, flag of funeral and so on.
例えば、スリランカの英雄やトラックの色、ツリートマト、葬式の旗など、その他いろいろ。
When I showed him the picture of not sweet banana, he said with a laugh, “They are cooking banana called Alkesel used banana curry. Al means cooking, kesel means banana in Sinhara.”
彼に甘くないバナナの写真を見せたら、彼は笑いながら、 「このバナナはアルケセルと呼ばれている、バナナカレーに使われる料理用のバナナです。 シンハラ語で、アルは料理、ケセルはバナナの意味です。」と言いました。
I didn’t know that.
知りませんでした。
And I said that dragon fruit and mango were delicious in Sri Lanka, 　　but they are not delicious in Japan. He said, “That’s right. Also I bought expensive mango in Ion supermarket, 　　it was not sweet, so I was disappointed.”
それから私が、スリランカのドラゴンフルーツやマンゴーは美味しかったのに、 　　日本では美味しくないと言ったら、 彼は「その通りです。私もスーパーマーケットのイオンで高いマンゴーを買ったのに、 　　甘くなかったのでがっかりしました。」と言いました。
I told him , “I think cheap dirty restaurant are more delicious 　　than expensive one. Especially cottoo, Srilankan fried rice. And milk tea served in cheep restaurant is tastier 　　than in hotel restaurant.”
私は彼に「私は高いレストランより、安くて汚い食堂の方がおいしいと思います。 特にスリランカチャーハンのコットゥーなんかね。 それに紅茶もホテルのレストランで出されるものより、安い食堂で出されるものの方がおいしい。」と話しました。
●I always forget the comparative degree. 　　　　From now on, I'll take care of it.
●私はいつも比較級を忘れてしまいます。今日も先生に指摘されました。 　　　　今度から気をつけようと思います。 　　　　delociousは長い単語なのでmoreをつけ、tastyは短い単語なのでerをつけるだけでいいですね。
He said, “Yes, I love cottoo, too. Cottoo is Srilankan junky food. That sounds “Cot cot cot.”
彼は「そうです。私もコットゥーが大好きです。 コットゥーはスリランカのジャンキーフードなんですよ。 コットゥコットゥコットゥという音がします。」と言いました。
I was very glad to talk about cottoo together.
私は一緒にコットゥーのことを話せてとてもうれしかった。
I said , “Almost Sri Lankan food were delicious, but Sri Lankan Airline’s flight Meals were not tasty, Especially rice. The rice was crushed. 　I think they wash the rice too strong.”
私は「ほとんどのスリランカの食べ物は美味しいのに、スリランカ航空の機内食はおいしくなかったです。 特にご飯。そのご飯は潰れていました。強く米を洗いすぎるんだと思います。」と言いました。
He said, “That’s right. 　I think so, too.”
彼は「その通りです。私もそう思います。」と言いました。
He loves durian, strong smelled fruit, but his family don’t like it. That depends the person.
彼は強烈な臭いのドリアンが大好きですが、家族は好きではありません。 人によるんですね。

Actually I wanted to try to eat durian in Sri Lanka, but I didn’t eat because even elephant walks avoiding it.
実は私はスリランカでドリアンを食べるのに挑戦したかったのですが、 象でさえ避けて歩くということなので、食べませんでした。
Next we talked about Sunday newspaper with “Marriage Proposals”.
次に私たちは“結婚募集広告”が載っている日曜版の新聞について話しました。
In Sri Lanka, horoscope is important to marriage.
スリランカでは、星占いは結婚にとって大切です。
I asked him if he believes in horoscope.
私は彼に星占いを信じているかどうかをききました。
He said, “My grandparents believed in horoscope completely, but I do a little bit.”
彼は言いました、 「私の祖父母は星占いを信じ切っていましたが、私はほんの少しだけ信じています。」
I remembered my family to hear that.
私はそれを聞いて私の家族を思い出しました。
My mother told me just before death, “Actually I like a man before marriage with your father,　but my mother asked a fortune-teller about it. The teller advised “Your daughter’s star doesn’t fit his star.” So I married your father by arranged marriage.”
私の母は亡くなる直前に私に言いました、 「実は私にはあなたのお父さんとの結婚前に好きな人がいたけど、私のお母さんが占い師に そのことについて聞いたら、その占い師はお宅の娘さんの星はその男性の星と合いません と言われて、それで私は見合い結婚であなたのお父さんと結婚しました。」
I was very surprised to hear that. It’s quite different from now in Japan.
私はそれを聞いてとても驚きました。 現在の日本ととても違っているからです。
Anyway his sister is 23 years old, just marriageable age in Sri Lanka. Now she is looking for husband by Marriage Proposals.
ところで彼のお姉さんは23歳で、スリランカでは結婚適齢期です。 今、彼女は結婚募集広告で夫となる人を探しています。
Then I asked him, “In your country, you put your personal information in a newspaper, is it OK ?
それから私は彼に聞きました、「あなたの国では、新聞に個人情報を載せますが、大丈夫なんですか？」
He said, “It’s OK. In Japan, you often hide the face on TV, in Sri Lanka, we don’t do it.”
彼は「大丈夫です。日本ではよくテレビで顔を隠しますが、スリランカでは隠しません。」と言いました。
When I was reading some marriage proposals on my homepage, he found a funny proposal.
私が私のホームページでいくつかの結婚募集広告を読んでいた時に、彼は面白い広告を見つけました。
“I’m looking for my sister’s partner. She was divorced. She is 55 years old, but so pretty and looks young. Please contact me with horoscope.”
「私は離婚した、とてもかわいい55歳の若く見える妹のためにパートナーを探しています。 星占いを添えて連絡をお待ちしています。」
He said, “Lots of people find some funny proposals like this and they publish them to Twitter.”
彼は「たくさんの人がこの様な面白い広告を見つけて、ツイッターに投稿しています。」と言いました。
I found the proposal and wrote on my homepage, too.
私もその広告を見つけて、ホームページに書きました。
When we looked at some pictures, I asked him “I heard a sound from a mobile cart in Sri Lanka. Do you know what it is?　 I took the video by camera. 　 You can listen to it by U-tube.”
何枚かの写真を見ていた時、私は彼にききました 「私はスリランカで移動販売車の音楽を聴いたんですが、 何の車かわかりますか？　私はカメラで動画を撮りました。　 ユーチューブで聞けます。」
He listened to it and taught me, “This is bread shop ! 　　The shop sells your favorite Erawalroty, too“
彼はその音楽を聴いて「これはパン屋ですよ！ それにあなたの大好きなエラワルロティーも売っていますよ。」と教えてくれました。

I'm talking about the latter half of the topics
今日はトピックスの後半を話そうと思います。
Next I asked him about funeral in Sri Lanka, “According to the book, in your country, the funeral is not held until all the family gather. 　 Is it true?”
次に私は彼にスリランカの葬式についてたずねました、 「ある本によると、あなたの国では家族全員が集まるまで、葬式 は行われないということですが、それは本当ですか？」
He answered, “Yes, it is. The other day, the funeral was not held for 3 days until my relative in China came back home."
「はい、そうです。先日、中国にいる私の親戚が家に帰ってくるまで、 3日間葬式は上げませんでした。」と彼は答えました
I told him, “Then, do you put some dry ice in the casket? Otherwise dead body will go bad?”
私は彼に言いました、「それなら、棺桶にドライアイスを入れるんですか？　 そうでないと死体は腐るでしょう？」
He said, “No, we don’t. 　　 We remove the internal organs from the dead body.”
彼は「いいえ、私たちは死体から内臓を取り除くんですよ。」と言いました。
I thought then that’s a good idea for hot country.
その時、私はそれは暑い国にとってはいい考えだと思いました。
But later, I thought who remove the internal organs?　 Probably bottom laver caste do?
でも内臓を取り除くのは誰なんだろうか？と私は後で思いました。　 最下層のカーストがするのではないでしょうか？
Caste（キャーストゥ）
Caste is a Hindu system. 　　 Then, why do the Buddhist have caste, too?
カーストはヒンズー教の制度です。　 それなら、なぜ仏教徒の間でもカーストが存在するのでしょうか？
In the old days, Buddha denied caste system. 　 I sympathize with his feelings.
昔、仏陀はカースト制度を否定しました。 私は仏陀の気持ちがよくわかります。
Sympathize（スィンパサイズ）同感する、共鳴する、同情する、気の毒に思う Deny （ディナーイ）否定する
I’d like to see his house in Sri Lanka, so he showed me it by google map.
私はスリランカの彼の家を見たかったので、彼はグーグルマップで家を見せてくれました。
There was a woman in front of his house on google map.
グーグルマップで彼の家の前にひとりの女性がいました。
According to him, she was a neighbor of his house.
彼によると、彼女は彼の家の近所の人でした。
They have a big garden with coconut tree and delicious mango tree.
ココナッツの木とおいしいマンゴーの木のある大きな庭があります。
I think tropical country is wonderful.
私は熱帯の国は素晴らしいと思います。
Next we talked about my home-visit in Sri Lanka.
次に私たちはスリランカでの私の家庭訪問について話しました。
I said, “In Japan, most family has both Buddhist altar and Shinto altar. I was surprised to see that my home-visit Sri Lankan family has both Buddhist altar and Hindu altar, too.”
私は「日本ではほとんどの家に、仏壇と神棚の両方があります。 スリランカで家庭訪問した家にも、仏壇とヒンズー棚があって、それを見て私は驚きました。」 と言いました。

He said, “Buddha is located above Hindu gods.”
彼は「仏陀はヒンズーの神々の上に位置しています。」と言いました。
According to the book, Buddha is one of Hindu gods. 　 But it’s in the Hindu ‘s place.
ある本によると、仏陀はヒンズーの神々の中の一人です。　 でもそれはヒンズーの立場からの考えなんですね。
I asked him, “Have you ever been to Perahera festival?”
私は彼に「ペラヘラ祭りに行ったことがありますか？」とききました。
He said, “No, I haven’t. 　　I watch it on TV every year.”
彼は「いいえ、行ったことがありません。私は毎年テレビでそれを見ています。」と言いました。
I thought it’s just like Hyakumangoku festival in Kanazawa to hear that.
私はそれを聞いて、金沢の百万石まつりのようだと思いました。
I asked him, “Do you know there was a flood in Sri Lanka 1 week ago?”
私は彼に「スリランカで１週間前に洪水があったのを知っていますか？」と聞きました。
He said“Yes, of course.”
彼は「はい、もちろんです。」と言いました。
According to the newspaper, at least 36 people lost their lives and over 150 people were missing from the landslides.
新聞によれば、少なくとも３６人が死亡し、１５０人以上の人々が土砂崩れによって行方不明になっています。
I told him, “My second daughter used to do a quiz with her friends 　　in her junior high school. 　 What's the capital of Sri Lanka? 　　　It’ Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte!”
私は彼に話しました「私の次女は中学校の時に友達とクイズをしていたものです。 「スリランカの首都は？　それはスリジャヤワルダナプラコッテ！」
Sri means great, Jayawardene means the name of ex-president 　　 in Sri Lanka, pra means town in Shinhara. So, Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte means great Jayawardene’s town Kotte .
シンハラ語で、スリは偉大な、ジャヤワルダナはスリランカの元大統領の名前、プラは町を意味します。 つまりスリジャヤワルダナプラコッテは偉大なジャヤワルダナの町のコッテという意味です。
Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is abbreviated as Kotte.
スリジャヤワルダナプラコッテはコッテと省略されます。
Abbreviate （アッブリーヴィエイト）言葉などを省略する
So, Sri Lankan people usually called it Kotte.
だからスリランカの人々は普通、コッテと呼びます。
My husband practices Karate every Sunday, so we took him to the gym next day.
私の夫は毎週日曜日に空手の稽古をしているので、次の日、私達は彼を体育館に連れて行きました。
Karate is popular in Sri Lanka, he has practiced a little bit in childhood.
空手はスリランカで人気があり、彼は子供の時にほんの少しだけ稽古をしたことがあります。
My husband lent him a Karate clothes.
私の夫は彼に空手着を貸しました。
Karate teacher taught him hard how to Karate.
空手の先生は彼に一生懸命に空手を教えてくれました。
To my surprise, he sounded “Pashi! 　Pashi !” like Karate expert. 　 It was cool.
驚いたことに、彼は空手の達人のように、“パシッ！　パシッ！”と音を出しました。　 クールでした。
He got the Karate knack early.
彼は空手のコツをつかむのが早かったです。
He said, “Karate training is very fun.　 I’m having a great time.”
彼は「空手の練習は面白くて、とても楽しいです。」と言いました。
My husband asked him, “Did you make any Japanese friends?”
私の夫は彼に「日本人の友達はできましたか？」とききました。
He answered, “No, .”
彼は「いいえ。」と答えました。
I thought it can’t be help. Because he lives in dormitory for foreign students, there are only foreign students in his university class and there are almost foreign students in the hotel restaurant that he is working in part time job.
それは仕方がないことだと私は思いました。 なぜならば、彼は外国人用の寮に住み、彼のクラスには外国人しかいませんし、 彼がアルバイトで働いているホテルのレストランでもほとんどが外国人なのです。
I think that it’s a good experience to have home visit for overseas students.
家庭訪問は留学生にとっていい経験だと私は思います。
But there are lots of students who want to home visit, but there are few host family.
でも家庭訪問したい学生はたくさんいるのに、ホストファミリーが少ないのです。
The demand is greater than the supply.
需要が供給を上まわっています。
●Supply（供給） and demand （需要）という場合、　 　日本語では“需要と供給”と言いますが、英語では逆になります 　先生によると、英語で"demand and supply"と発音するより逆の方が 　発音しやすいからだそうです。かたい発音とやわらかい発音の違いだそうです。 　日本語でも同じことがいえますね。供給と需要と逆に言うと発音しにくいです。 他にも順序が日本語と逆な言葉がないかなと、探してみました。 　　cats and dogs 　犬猫（いぬ　ねこ）　　なぜか、ねこいぬ　とはいいませんね。 　　bride and groom　新郎新婦（しんろう　しんぷ）　 　　black and white　白黒（しろ　くろ）　　決して黒白とはいいません。 　　here and there　あちこち 　　でも同じものもあります　　　left and right 　左右
I have been host family for over 10 years.
私は１０年以上、ホストファミリーをしてきています。
But I really enjoyed especially this time, I think because I have been to Sri Lanka.
でも特に今回楽しかったのは、私がスリランカに行ったことがあるからだと思います。
We had some common topics.
私達には共通の話題があったのです。
I want him to come to our house again.
私は彼がまた我が家に来てほしいと思います。

●今日はこんな質問を先生にしました。 私………「傘を差しなさい。」は "Put up your umbrella."ですか？ 先生……それは間違いではありませんが、putを使うとややこしいので、 　　　　　　単純に"Open your umbrella" ”Close your umbrella"の方が 　　　　　　わかりやすくていいですね。 私………それでは「傘をすぼめなさい」は"Fold your umbrella."でもいいですか？ 先生……その言い方だと、もし、その傘が折りたたみ傘の場合、 　　　　　「傘を折りたたみなさい」という意味になります。 　　　　　　　また、ビーチパラソルの場合は"Raise the beach umbrella" 　　　　　"Lower the beach umbrella"となります。 なるほど、ビーチパラソルの場合、上に上げるイメージだから、raiseなんですね。納得です。
●今日、私はある発見をしました。クラスメートのＭさんがわんちゃんの腎臓のことを、 　　kidneyとおっしゃったのです。 　　私は来週行くイギリス旅行のガイドブックで、イギリスのパブではキドニーパイという料理が 　　あることを知っていましたが 　　それは腎臓のパイだったのですね。知りませんでした。腎臓はkidney　しっかり覚えました。 　　グループレッスンは個人レッスンと違い、他のクラスメートさんのおっしゃることで 　　いろいろ勉強になるので、本当にいいです。
