【1】
"Bread is better than the songs of birds."

「花より団子」

The literal translation in Japanese is "Bread is better than the songs of birds."

日本語の直訳は「鳥の歌声よりもパンの方がいい。」です。



In Japan, we say 　　"Dumplings are better than cherry blossoms."

日本では「花（桜）より団子」と言います。



In japan, 　　we have a custom of seeing cherry blossoms in April.

日本には４月に桜の花見をする習慣があるんです。



It's interesting 　　that cherry blossom is expressed songs of birds 　　and dumpling is expressed bread in English.

「桜」が「鳥の鳴き声」、「団子」が「パン」と英語では表現されているのが面白いです。

Expression is different depending on the country, isn't it ?

表現が国によって違いますよね。

Please pay attention the color of the dumplings.

お団子の色に注目して下さい。



Dumplings are on a stick in the order of pink-white-green 　　from the top.

団子は上からピンクー白ー緑の順に串に刺さっています。

Change of cherry tree is expressed by the colors.

桜の木の変化が色によって表現されています。



	Pink expresses bud, white expresses flowers and green expresses cherry tree in leaf. ピンクはつぼみ、白は花、そして緑は葉桜を表現しています。

"Out of the mouth comes evil."

「口は災いの元」



My late grandmother on the mother's side was very silent.

私の亡くなった母方の祖母はとても無口でした。

She told my mother the proverb over and over again.

祖母は私の母に、そのことわざを何回も言っていました。

Because my late mother was chatterbox like me.

なぜならば、私の亡き母は私の様に、とてもおしゃべりだったからです。

Granma preached her, 　　"Be silent. Out of the mouth comes evil !."

祖母は母に説教しました。「黙って。口は災いの元！」

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do."

「郷に入りては郷に従え」

There are various proverbs in the world 　　same as the english proverb, but the expressions are quite different 　　depending on the country.

世界中に、この英語のことわざと同様のものがいろいろありますが、その表現の仕方は国によって大きな違いがあります。

For example, in Malaysia, it's expressed 　"Say baa in mountain hut, 　　say moo in water buffalo fence." I like the expression.

例えば、マレーシアでは「山小屋ではメェーと鳴き、水牛の囲いではモーと鳴け。」　　と表現されます。私はこの表現が好きです。

"Four eyes can see more than two." "Two heads are better than one."

「三人寄れば文殊（もんじゅ）の知恵」英語の直訳２つ　　４つの目は２つの目よりよく見える　　２つの頭は１つの頭よりもよい



It's interesting that "three persons"in Japanese 　　is expressed "four eyes" or "two heads" in English.

日本語の「３人」が英語では「４つの目」または「２つの頭」と　　表現されているのが興味深いです。

Then let me show you the meaning of the Japanese.

それではその日本語の意味をお話しさせて下さい。

If an ordinary person think alone, 　　he (she) doesn't have a good idea, 　　but if 3 ordinary persons talk, 　　they have a good idea like wisdom of Monju.

凡人が１人で考えても、いい考えは思いつかないが、凡人３人で考えれば文殊の知恵のようないい考えが思いつくものだ。



Monju means one of buddhist saint 　　who is symbol of wisdom and knowledge in Buddhism.

文殊というのは仏教の世界において、知恵や知識の象徴とされている菩薩のことです。



【５】
"Tomorrow is another day."

「明日は明日の風が吹く」（明日のことを思い煩うな）

The proverb is famous for its an American movie of 　　"Gone with the Wind."

このことわざはアメリカ映画の「風と共に去りぬ」で有名です。



Also Jesus Christ said the words in Mattew 6:34 of the Bible.

またイエスキリストも聖書マタイ６章３４節でその言葉を言っています。

【６】
"An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

「目には目を、歯には歯を」

It's famous as the words of Hammurabi's Code 　　that King Hammurabi of Babylonia 　　made in Ancient Mesopotamia age.

これは古代メソポタミア時代のバビロニア王のハンムラビ王が作った　　ハンムラビ法典の中の言葉として有名です。



By the way, 　　Hammurabi's Code encourage a revenge in general, 　　but actually it's for prevent too much revenge.

ところで一般的にはハムラビ法典では復讐を勧めているように考えられていますが、実は過剰な報復を防止しています。

A person who is hurt someone's eyes, 　　mustn't punish more than their hurt eyes 　　(for example, other body parts).

誰かの目を傷つけた者は、目を傷つける以上（例えば他の体の部位まで）の罰を与えてはいけない。

Marcus Aurelius, the 16th Roman Emperor(161-180), said "The best way of revenge is not doing the same behavior."

第１６代ローマ皇帝のマルクス・アウレリウスは言いました。「もっともよい復讐の方法は、自分まで同じような行為をしないことだ。」
