●other　another　の違いについて

　　　other　　　　　複数で、不特定の物を指す

　　　　　　　otherは、「他の・別の」という意味を持ち、複数形名詞と一緒に使われます。


　　　　　　　例：〇There were other people in the house.（家の中に他の人たちがいた。）

　　　　　　　　　×There were other friend in the house.


　　　　　　　※The otherは、単数形の名詞を指し、「残りの1つのもの・人」という意味です。

　　　　　　　　２つ物があるときに、「もう一方」という意味で使うので、　

　　　　　　　the otherは、特定された単数のものになります。

　　　　　　　　例：〇There are two students I met yesterday. One is from America, the other is from Brazil.

　　　　　　　　　　　　(昨日2人の生徒に会いました。1人はアメリカ出身で、もう1人はブラジル出身です。)




　　　　another 　　　単数で、不特定の物を指す

　　　　　　　

　　　　　　　Anotherは、もともと「an other」だったのが、合わさり「another」になったと言われています。

　　　　　　　つまり、不定冠詞a/anが付く単語にしか使われない＝不特定で単数のものを指します。

　　　　　　　「もうひとつ」という意味で使われることが多い単語です。

　　　　　　　The other と似ている、と感じるかもしれませんが、the otherは「1つの物に対してある、

　　　　　　　別のもう1つ」と特定されたものである一方、

　　　　　　　anotherは「1つの物に対して別の、たくさんある中のどれか１つ」と、不特定のもののうち１つを指します。

●旭日旗（きょくじつき）

　　　太陽と太陽の光をデザインした旗。

　　　明治維新以後は軍旗として用いられるようになった。

　　　侵略や愛国主義の象徴とされて、問題になった。
日本の古い旗、日の出の旗の方がいいと私は思います。

　　そのエリアは立ち入り禁止だそうです。

 
 
It became cold due to the cold rain.

It was quite different from hot Anuradhapura.
冷たい雨が降ってきて、寒くなってきました。

暑いアヌラーダプラとは全然違いました。
 
So I told my driver a Japanese old ghost story

　　"Snow Woman" called "Yuki Onna"in Japanese,

　　then, he looked scared and colder.
それでドライバーに、日本の古いゆうれい話の「雪女」を話したら、

　　彼はとても怖そうで、またさらに寒くなったようでした。
 
 
Wow, it looks scared.

We arrived at the hotel in Nuwara Eliya at 3 p.m.
午後３時にヌワラエリアのホテルに到着しました。
Nuwara Eliya is a place as summer resort

　　 in British colonial era.

ヌワラエリアは、イギリス植民地時代に避暑地として栄えた場所です。
There were some buildings

　　that retain the atmosphere of that time.

The hotel I stayed was British style.
その当時の面影を残した建物がいくつかありました。

私の泊まったホテルも、イギリスっぽい建物でした。

The owner of the hotel was christian,

　　so there were paintings and sculptures

　　of Jesus Christ all around the hotel.
このホテルのオーナーは、クリスチャンで、ホテルのあちこちに

　　イエスキリストの絵や彫刻が置いてありました。
 
 
When I entered my room,

　　I noticed that there were no amenities at all.
ホテルの部屋に入ると、ホテル備品が全くないことに気づきました。
 
 
Oh, tiny small.
 
小さいかわいい部屋ですね。 
 
Then, before taking a walk in the evening,

　　I told the receptionist,

　　"There is are no amenities at all in my room."　　
それで、夕方の散歩に行く前に、フロント係りに私は言いました。

　　「私の部屋にホテル備品が何も置いてありません。」
 
It's a simple mistake.
 
単純ミスですよ。

He said, "Okay, I'll have them prepare

There was Nuwara Eliya Golf Club near the hotel.

The club was made in 1889

　　by the idea of plantation owners,

　　and it was the first golf club in Asia.
ホテルのすぐそばには、ヌワラエリア・ゴルフクラブがありました。

このゴルフクラブはイギリス農園主たちの発案で、１８８９年に作られ、

　　アジアで最初のゴルフ場となりました。

   

It was cold, so I bought nice and warm steamed beans

　　at the street vendor in front of the Victoria Park.　　
 
寒かったので、ビクトリア公園前の露天商で

　　ほっかほっかの蒸し豆を買いました。 
   
 
The beans were much bigger than soybeans,

　　they had roasted smell and they were tasty. 
 
その豆は、大豆よりもずっと大きい豆で、

　　とても香ばしくておいしかったです。
 
Do you know the name of this steamed beans ?

Are there such a street vendor of the beans

　　outside of Nuwara Eliya ? 
 
先生はこの蒸し豆の名前を知っていますか？

Chick peas called Hiyoko-mame in Japanese.

I tried to international call my husband in Japan

　　at the telephone shop in the town as usual.
町の電話屋で、私はいつものように日本の夫へ

　　国際電話をかけることにしました。
I called by myself as usual,

　　　but I couldn't get through the phone at all.
いつもの様に自分でかけましたが、全然通じませんでした。
So I told a shop staff member about it,

　　he decided to call by himself.
それでお店の人にそのことを言ったら、

　　彼がかけてくれることになりました。　
I wrote my home telephone number on the paper,

　　and read out,

　　"076-●●●-●755　This number is 7, not 1."　　
 
私は日本の自宅の電話番号を紙に書いて、声を出して読み上げました。

　　「０７６－●●●－●７５５

　　この数字は７で１ではありませんよ。」
He told me, "The phone is connected, please."

　　so I changed the phone from him,

　　then I talked to a stranger.　
 
「はい、かかりました。どうぞ。」と言われたので、

　　電話を彼から変わったら、私が話したのは知らない人でした。
 
I complainted to him,

　　"I told you, this number is 7, not 1."
私はその人に、「この数字は１ではなくて、７と言ったでしょう。」

　　と文句を言いました。
I had a dinner at an Indian restaurant

　　near the hotel with my driver.
 
私はドライバーとホテルのそばのインドレストランで夕食を食べました。
 
   
Very local place.

It looks delicious, I'm hungry now.
 
地元の店ですね。

おいしそうですね、今お腹がすいています。 
 
I ate Seafood Bombay Rice and Chai,

　　it was hot, spicy and tasy.　

●Bombay (Mumbai)　ボンベイはムンバイの旧地名
私はシーフードボンベイライスとチャイを食べましたが、

　　辛くてスパイシーでとてもおいしかったです。 
Now, Bombay is Mumbai, isn't it ? 
 
今、ボンベイはムンバイですよね？ 
 
Ya. 
 
はい、そうですね。 
 
My second daughter lives in Mumbai now.
 
私の次女は現在、ムンバイに住んでいます。

え～本当？
 
She is working in Mumbai ? 
 
娘さんはムンバイで働いているんですか？ 
No, her husband works in Mumbai.

He was transfered  from Tokyo to London,

　　Hong Kong and Mumbai.
いいえ、娘の夫がムンバイで働いています。

彼は東京からロンドン、香港、そしてムンバイに転勤になったんです。 
 
Bombay is very popular because Indian sweets.
 
ボンベイはインドのお菓子でとても人気があります。 
 
There was a muslim couple next to my table.

They got angry loudly

　　because the server brought pork dish by mistake.

I thought it was not easy to eat

　　at a restaurant for muslim.
 
隣のテーブルにイスラム教徒のカップルがいました。

ボーイさんが間違えて豚肉料理を持ってきたので、

　　大きな声で怒っていました。

イスラム教徒にとって、レストランで食事するのはむずかしいと思いました。。
 
Normally in Sri Lanka, they have halal in restaurant

　　but this restaurant didn't have halal.
 
通常、スリランカではレストランにはハラール料理があるんですが、

　　このレストランにはハラール料理がなかったんですね。 
 
Then, I went back to the hotel at 8 o'clock p.m..
それから、午後８時にホテルに帰りました。
　
But there was were no amenities yet in my room,

　　so I got angry, "You told me."
ところが私の部屋にはまだ備品が用意されていなかったので、

　　フロントに行って、「（あなたは帰ってくるまでに用意させますと）

　　言ったでしょう？」と怒りました。
I thought it was because of tip.
 
チップのためだと思いました。
It was cold in Nuwara Eliya,

　　so I wanted to soak in a warm bath.
ヌワラエリアは寒かったので、温かいお風呂に浸かりたいと思いました。

 
 
But I noticed there was no bathtub stopper.
 
ところが今度はバスタブの栓がないことに気づきました。 
 
Why on earth were there nothing and nothing?
 
一体全体、どうして何から何までないないづくしなのでしょうか。
Besides, the stopper was terrible,

　　because the hot water leaked.
 
しかも、その栓はお湯が漏れるひどいものでした。
 
The hotel had some fancy furnitures,

　　but the stopper was too poor.
このホテルには立派な家具が置いてあるのに、

　　お風呂の栓はお粗末過ぎました。

 
 
The hotel breakfast was simple British style,

　　not buffet style.
ホテルの朝食は、バイキング（バフェ―スタイル）ではなく、

　　シンプルなブリティッシュスタイルでした。
   

Toast, Egg dish and Tea

トースト、卵料理、紅茶
 
I asked an Australian woman there,

　　"Did your room have any amenities ?"

She said, "No, nothing."

私は食堂でオーストラリア人女性にききました。

　　「あなたの部屋には備品がありましたか？」

彼女は「いいえ、何もありませんでした。」と言いました。
Besides, in her case, they brought only bath towel.
 
しかも彼女の場合、バスタオルだけを持ってきたそうです。
 
In other words, they brought all amenities to me

　　because Japanese old woman was scary,　　
 
つまり、日本のばあさんは怖いから全部持ってきたということです。
 
 
 
Hahaha.
 
ははは。 
 
When I checked out of the hotel,

　　I showed the receptionist a piece of paper

　　that I wrote the night before.
朝、チェックアウトの時、私は前の晩に書いた

　　１枚の紙をフロント係りに見せました。

The problems of this hotel

　① No bath towel

　② No face towel

　③ No bath mat

　④ No electric kettle

　⑤ No bottled water

　⑥ No bathtub stopper

　⑦Staff looked at me and talked

　　　　in a whisper with smirk.


このホテルの問題点

　　①バスタオルがない

　　②フェイスタオルがない

　　③バスマットがない

　　④お湯をわかす電気ポットがない

　　⑤ペットボトルの水がない

　　⑥お風呂の栓がない

　　⑦従業員が私を見てニタニタ笑いながらコソコソ話をしていた
"I stayed 5 hotels in Sri Lanka.
「私はスリランカで、５つのホテルに滞在しました。
All the hotels prepared from No.1 to No.8

　　except your hotel.
 
このホテルを除いて、全てのホテルは①～⑥を全て準備していました。
Is this hotel a guest house ?
このホテルはゲストハウスですか？
Guest house don't have them, of course.
ゲストハウスならば、もちろん①～⑥を置いてありません。
But this hotel is not guest house, is it ?
でもこのホテルはゲストハウスではないですよね？
I love Sri Lanka.

There are some tasty food, great sight-seeing places,

　　kind friendly people in Sri Lanka.
 
私はスリランカが大好きです。

スリランカにはおいしい食べ物、素晴らしい観光地があり、

　　親切でフレンドリーな人々がいます。
 
Each of those hotels have some problems each.

But the hotel staff members were all kind,

　　so I endured them.

The most important thing is staff's manner.
これまで私が滞在したホテルには、それぞれ少しずつ問題がありました。

でもホテルのスタッフはみんな親切でしたから、

　　私は我慢しました。

最も大切なことは、スタッフのマナーです。

You are all professional hotelmen, aren't you ?

Please be proud of your work.
あなた方はプロのホテルマンですよね。

あなた方の仕事に誇りを持って下さい。
I am 60 years old now.

Actually this travel is 60th anniversary.
私は現在６０歳です。

実はこのスリランカ旅行は６０歳の記念旅行です。
I have enjoyed since I visited Sri Lanka.

But suddenly I have a bad experience here.
私はスリランカを訪れて以来、ずっと楽しんできました。

でも突然ここでいやな体験をしました。
I didn't leave a tip in my room.

It was the first time for me.

Please think about what you did.
私は私の部屋にチップを置きませんでした。

そんなことは初めてです。

自分たちのしたことを反省して下さい。

　　who came all the way from Japan, please."
おばあちゃんには親切にして下さいね。」
Hahaha.

Then, I asked him,

　　"Have you never prepared amenities

　　　　　at first on purpose from before?"

　　he answered, "No, no way !　

　　They forgot to do in your room just by chance."
それから、私が「あなた方は以前から、

　　最初はわざと備品を準備しないでんですか？」

　　ときくと、彼は「いえいえ、たまたま、あなたの部屋で忘れただけです。」

　　と答えました。
So I told him,

　　"Be quiet !

　　Australian person said

　　her room didn't have them at all, either

　　at the breakfast restaurant."
 
それで、私は「黙りなさい！

　　朝食のレストランで、オーストラリア人も備品が全然なかったって

　　言ってましたよ。」と言いました。
Then, the manager's attitude changed suddenly,

　　and apologized me, "Sorry, madam, sorry."
すると、マネージャーは急に態度が変わって、

　　「ごめんなさい。マダーム。ごめんなさい。」と謝りました。
The manager told me,

　　"Could you wait for about 15 minutes, please ?

　　I'll have a lunch box prepared for you."
 
そのマネージャーは私に言いました

　　「１５分くらいお待ち頂けますか？お弁当を準備させますから。」 
 
I refused his offer. 
 
私は彼の申し出を断りました。
 
When we left the hotel

　　and drove down the tea plantation,

　　a few Tamil children came to our car.
ホテルを出発して、お茶畑を下っていく途中、タミール人の子どもが

　　数人、車にやって来ました。
My driver gave them some money.
 
ドライバーがその子どもたちにお金を上げていました。
And a Tamil woman walked barefoot

　　with tea leaves basket on her back in the cold rain.
またタミール人女性が、冷たい雨の中、

　　背中にお茶を淹れるかごを背負って裸足で歩いていました。
I felt sorry for such children and the woman,

　　I thought that's why they get a tip by taking amenities.
そんな子どもや女性を見ていたら、かわいそうに思いました。

　　だから、備品を持って行ってチップをもらっているのかと思いました。

In Sri Lanka, they don't have minimum wage.
 
スリランカでは、最低賃金をもらうことができません。 
 
Goverment doesn't help them.
 
政府はそれらの人々を助けません。
 
So people work the full day,

　　but they get only hundred yen.　　 
 
だから人々は一日中働いても１００円くらいしかもらえません。 
 
My driver gave money to the children

　　only in Nuwara Eliya. 
 
私のドライバーが子どもたちにお金をあげたのはヌワラエリアだけでした。
 
My mam mom has told me,

　　"If you see a beggar in Colombo,

　　don't give money because of business." 
 
私の母は私に言ってきました、

　　「もしコロンボで乞食を見ても、ビジネスだからお金をあげてはだめ。」 
It has 2 patterns, mom and mum.

　　mom is American English and mum is British English.　　　

 
マムには２つのパターンがあります。

　　Mom　はアメリカ英語で、Mumはイギリス英語です。

Group of people beg on the whole day,

　　and they go back, then they are collected money.

She couldn't speak Japanese, no English.

I met her for the first time at my dad's restaurant,

　　but we didn't speak because she just came to Japan,

　　so she didn't know any Japanese

　　and she couldn't speak English,too. 
 
彼女は日本語を話せませんでした、英語もです。

私は父のレストランで初めて彼女に会いましたが、

　　彼女は日本に来たばかりで、日本語を知らなかったし、
